Hard work. Possibly even harder than going out for a job. Long hours, difficult results, stress. The list goes on. It depends on your individual talents. I'm trying to make some as an author on Amazon, but according to most of the writers there, you're lucky to make a few hundred a year.

Most of the money I make online is by proofreading. The best method to earn online varies from individual to individual (their skills/experience, aptitude, time they have at their disposal, their interests, etc.). What works for me might not work for you and vice versa.
