Taxes in the Can

United States
March 22, 2017 6:43pm CST
I'm always relieved when my income taxes are done. I don't care if I'm getting a refund or paying or just breaking even. I don't like having it over my head and I don't want to make any mistakes. So check that off my springtime chores. I went and had them done today. Doing the happy dance!!

It's always good to get the dreaded taxes out the way. They do seem to make everyone about nervous about whether they are done correctly or not.

We had ours completed in mid February. The refund arrived and has been banked.

Alas, no refund for me. But the amount owed is small so I'm grateful for mercies received.

@paigea this is the first time ever we have had everything together really early. Usually we send our in on the last possible day.

We would never be able to handle it if we had to pay. Almost always we get a decent amount back that helps stock back up on groceries, and pay some bills. I do ours by myself and in the process of trying to get things done now.

We always have done that with my husbands income over the years, like you, it would have been hard to come up with that extra money. We loved having a nice refund! I started a business in 1998 for about 10 years that was quite successful and we had to pay taxes quarterly (isn't that awful??) We set money aside, but we still had to pay because it was a business. Then after retirement we had a streak where we didn't pay but we didn't get anything back. That was fine with me. Now that my husband passed away, filing as a single person changed the dynamics and I owe about $100 every year. This year a little less, last year a little more. I don't like to change things because I don't want a big mix up with my check so I'm not going to have them withhold anything and just leave it as is. I know ahead what it's going to be and so it's not a stress to pay.

I always feel the same way, we had our papers done almost 2 weeks ago. And our accountant gave us a lot of information on our move, we need to save everything, receipts from the pod, change of address, lawyer and real estate fees and she can use them next year. And I was glad she told us, our change of address cost us $100 alone-and that was the cheapest of any of those items that I mentioned!

@Jeanniemaries I guess they are thinking of the labels that they will need to print off for our new address and put it on any mail that comes that way. Most of our mail is from utility companies, those all have our forwarding address you give that when you set up for the final readings. And any family that may send us cards will have our address. Canada Post is outrageously expensive, did you know it is a dollar for a stamp to mail a letter within out country? Its really no wonder why people don't use the mail. For me to send you something is $1.65 for a stamp-crazy isn't it?

Why in the world would it cost any money to have a change of address?

@Juliaacv Wow, I had no idea. I actually correspond frequently with two friends in Canada. The odd thing is half the time the stamps aren't cancelled. For packages they send we all pay about the same amount but our stamps are less than half a dollar for domestic mail.

I did mine last week, when I was off from work due to the snowstorm. I know something is wrong, because I ended up with $159 extra added to my income (from a 1065 form), which I never got, so I'm getting les of a refund than what I should. I thought for sure the IRS would tell me what was wrong and either correct it themselves, or make me do it, but they accepted the return, and I'll be getting my refund shortly. I know I should have probably paid someone to do my taxes this year, but the extra I paid in taxes isn't as much as I would have paid for someone else to do them.
