What is "human nature"? After reading this particularly grisly account of what two like-minded human beings did to another of their own kind, I have my doubts that there is such a thing as "human nature". For anyone to inflict absolutely horrific acts upon any creature, especially a member of the same species, beggars belief. And I really despair when I read of individuals who join forces to inflict such suffering upon another individual, recording events to keep for posterity. What is it that drives such behaviour? Gross-out warning for the report that follows, do not proceed if you are of a sensitive nature!
A married couple who pleaded guilty to a catalogue of horrific sexual assaults on a woman they kept as a virtual prisoner will be sentenced in April.

would be nice to know when exactly miss x raised the alarm. as she had 4 kids with him that suggests to me she may have known for some time about what was going on.

@Mike197602 I imagine more grisly details will come to light after sentencing, you are right. I don't think I really want to know more...

@ScribbledAdNauseum I doubt the full story will come to light as they seem to still have some reporting restrictions even now. Maybe after sentencing.

Unfortunately it is human nature to inflict horrors on others just look what the Romans and Mayans did. Thankfully there are people like you and me who wouldn't dream of doing those kinds of things.

I think that part of human nature that drives inventiveness is to blame. A sense of civic or moral duty is what seems to be missing in such cases.

That could be true @pgntwo What really gets me is that whole mob attitude so many people seem to get. It's one of the things that makes humans so damn scary.

@rebelann Gang mentality is oft so - behaviour changes when your buddies are there to back you up. Perhaps it is a form of pack mentality.

Yes, sorry 'bout that - the article turned my stomach too, but it was germane to my post... The warning was necessary, I think.

There is something wrong with people. I don't know what. Their mental health is not good or there is something wrong with the water or air and it affects people. I hate hearing or reading the news anymore.

Environmental conditions, interesting viewpoint. I hate the news for similar reasons, the main one being "Good news does not sell newspapers".

This is really shocking. We had serial killers (husband and spouse/partner) in Perth who enslaved then killed several women. Their actions included making them dig their own graves. So depraved.

I wonder if those who inflict such crimes share a common genetic make-up? Some particular combination of genes that results in such behaviour...

Absolutely none. But why not? Upbringing? Genetics? Where does the capacity for compassion go in such cases?

Had trouble in pressing that like...words fail me ..a child, a person younger than me, a person who is in some way disadvantaged in the situation when compared to me, an elderly person ...they are all definitely not to be cheated, taken from, or hurt. Rape is simply ..............short of words...

So the Bakers brought the woman from England to Ireland? How did they even manage that I wonder? It shows premeditation.. I don't know much about the laws over there but I wonder that Miss X isn't also being charged. It seems as if she played roll of some sort, if not small... Poor woman, and equally poor husband who had no idea where she was, or if she was even alive, for eight years!

There is freedom of movement between the UK and Ireland for nationals of either country. Smuggling of people across the border between one and the other is not unheard of, either.

A similar case has recently happened in Germany. I think you're wrong here. It **IS** human nature to do such things. Animals don't do it.

D'you know, I think you're right. Humans are one of the few species that experience boredom, and the old saying "the devil makes work for idle hands" has never been so close to the truth...

@MALUSE The perception is beasts have no morals. But the moralistic ones on this planet are much worse in so many ways.

@pgntwo I know I'm right. We tend to insult animals when we say, "They behave like beasts." Beasts don't behave badly. They are what they are. They have no negative character traits.

I guess, like most things, it is a continuum - and such acts are the product of those at the ends or edge of that continuum. The extremes, if you like.
