Look at their little smiling faces!

I just had to share this with you. It's a gorgeous sunny spring day here and this patch of violets is growing on the roadside verge. It makes a striking patch of colour and such a cheery thing to see their little faces lifted to the sun as you walk past.

They are very pretty there, but no so much in my lawn. Well, I guess you could still say they are pretty there too, but unfortunately once they take over there's not too much green grass left growing around the violets. I made the mistake of letting them have a space in my garden after we moved in and they've able taken up the whole lawn in the back, the side year and a good portion in the front. Once they quit flowering nothing takes it's place and it looks like a big bare patch. So, sometimes I work on eliminating them when I have the time.

@Fleura If the grass would continue to grow around the ones that have infiltrated our lawn like the grass is growing in your image here, it wouldn't be so bad. But, it seems that if the violets have their way here nothing else much grows in that same area once they're gone.

They look so small and delicate, but actually they're pretty tough little plants. Our patch of grass is quite a mixture of weeds and moss anyway, so I'm not that bothered!

There's another patch a bit further along f paler ones, and a patch of white ones around the corner.

The wild violets are my favourite flowers. Our lawn is covered with violets right now, you may be sure that I am not going to mow the lawn.

I love them too, I am encouraging some to colonise our grass.

@Fleura I know that they are considered weeds, they are the nicest weeds that grow in my lawn and I am surely not pulling them out.

Very cheerful. We have wild violets here and there but they do get mowed over since they are in the lawn

I'm looking forward to the profusion of wildflowers that will start to bloom in the next month or so. The warmer weather this week should speed that process up a bit.
