Sometimes Learning the Hard Way Can be Detrimental to Life

I just learned something today the hard way. And, the life that learning impacted is my tablet. I have a Verizon Ellipsis 7, I think it is which I got two years ago around Father's Day. I understood that the newer batteries could be charged anytime even when there was still plenty of battery left, but I didn't know it could be harmful if I waited until it died one time to many. My tablet hasn't been charging like it used to before. I'll have it hooked up to current while playing my games or being on mylot and that didn't use to bother it at all, but since I've been home more after my surgery having it hooked up all the time seemed to be depleting the charge faster than it should have been doing. It used to die when it still have about twelve percent charge left, but more recently it seems to have gone down to zero percent more and more. It looks like new batteries on Amazon will cost under twenty-five dollars, but I'll probably take it into the Verizon store first to make sure they can't resurrect it or whether their batteries there are the same price which means I could have it in the same day.

Sometimes they may replace the batteries free of charge. Check it out on the internet if it is a known problem!

I've had the tablet already for one and a half years. I'd think if there were an ongoing problem it might have surfaced before this already? I was beginning to wonder why all my various cords weren't doing the trick. I didn't realize it might be due to me waiting too long to charge it when it's in use. Oddly enough, before my surgery it seemed fine. Then I'd turn it off between my breaks and lunches at work even though I wasn't charging it all the time then. It's only gotten worse these last several weeks while I've been stuck at home.

@MarshaMusselman I once had a Sony camera for about five years. Suddenly it went wrong while I was on holiday in Las Vegas. I checked on the internet and found there was a fault with the innards. So sent it back and they repaired it free of charge. Came back as good as new!

@garymarsh6 I may get it checked out one of these days just to see. I discovered after writing this that it was finally charging. What used to take merely eight hours or less to charge is now taking much longer. Marsha32 said one of her devices has something wrong with it and it now takes 24hrs to charge. Maybe if I get better at making sure it doesn't go all the way down to zero when using it, that will help it charge easier. I'll have to work with it a bit to see what works out.

My ipod seems to be running down on battery life much faster lately. I assumed there really is nothing that could be done. If I take it apart it could damage it.

@MarshaMusselman I always let it get to where the battery shows low then I plug it in to charge.

@MarshaMusselman Last night when I went to bed my iPod showed it was at 50% I woke up this morning and looked at it and it went to where it shows the battery red and 12 percent life left grrr. So something drains the battery when I am not even using it. Maybe @daddyevil can give me a little advice. I'm not good at figuring out things with my iPod like I can with computers or my cell phone.

@shaggin I think I was doing that too often more recently and that's why I was having problems with it. Once I quite waiting until it got that low it seems like it's back to charging overnight again, but when I let it go toward zero percent then it does take a bit longer to charge. Most of the devices around these days have batteries where you can charge them at anytime and it won't mess up the batteries.

Hope you got what you wanted and maybe a little cheaper. If they want your business a store might do it for free.

It's working again. It just happened to take over a day and a half before it began to show it was charging. I'll need to make sure I don't let it go down to zero very often or very close together, I think, just to be sure.

hope you got your problem fixed. Once we get dependent on these gadgets , its annoying if they don't work like we want them to. How are your legs doing?

I've doing very well with my knees. I just got okayed for seven more sessions of physical therapy. I also went to planet fitness last week one day and will go back this Thursday. I'm doing well and if I was a diehard with doing my exercises at home I'd probably be further along yet, but everyone keeps saying that I'm doing great.

It's my understand that you shouldn't leave them plugged in all the time, but mine are most all the time. My older tablet has about 3 hours of active time off the charger, but my newer one, something is wrong with it. It goes down fast and then takes about 24 hours to fully charge back up again.

I was only keeping it plugged in to get more use out of it while awake and not being able to do much else the first two weeks home from surgery. Oddly enough, I noticed a bit ago it's back up to 75% again, it's just taken a lot longer to get started charging that it did before. I had it plugged in all night long and when I checked it before church, it wouldn't even show whether it had charged just a smidgen. The face stayed black. I switched plugs and after church it was the same way. Finally, I put it back near my computer and hooked it back up there again even though I really didn't expect for it to do anything, and now it's finally working again. I did a bit of reading and it said we should let it go down to at least 50% often enough before recharging it again just to help it last longer. I guess I'll need to make sure I use it without keeping it on the charger for a few hours before putting it back on again.

I'll have to find out the particulars once I get a replacement battery unless they're able to do something there about it. I wouldn't think it would change so quickly in less than a months time. It didn't have any issues with recharging before I had my surgery.

It's several years old, so I doubt it would be covered in some way especially since I didn't get any extended warranty with it. I did just happen to notice that it is finally charging once again. Marsha32 said hers takes 24hrs to charge now and that's about how long mine has been charging since it went down to zero. I'll have to watch it more closely and make sure it doesn't go down quite that far before giving it a rest.

Uhm... Marsha? You are not understanding everything that is/was happening with your tablet and it's battery(ies).. Your tablet didn't use to die when it still had 12% charge left in the battery. Your tablet went into conservation mode when it had 12% charge left in it's battery. (At what percentage of battery life your tablet does that is an option you can control. I have my tablets set to conservation mode at 2% of charge.) Were you leaving your tablet plugged in most of the time? Doing that doesn't damage your battery(ies) UNLESS you ever leave your device where it can overheat.... Say, in your car on a warm-ish day. Letting your battery get hot at all cuts into it's serviceable lifespan. With higher rated rechargeable batteries allowing them to get hot in a vehicle will destroy the battery's ability to be charged/recharged. (It might show fully charged after the battery gets hot, but the charge drains out as soon as you unplug the battery again.) NEVER leave an electronic device in your vehicle! You might think the day is cool. The interior of your car concentrates the heat and will ruin a battery. All devices using rechargeable batteries should be fully charged before first use. Then the battery should NOT be fully drained before being re-charged. (Draining your battery completely will hasten it's demise. When the tablet goes into conservation mode, charge it up again!) Most manufacturers suggest doing this five to nine times, including initial charge. Supposedly, that helps the battery to attain "structure" internally and allows it to attain it's full charge capacity. It is best NOT to use anything that says it rapid charges your rechargeable battery. Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of time they can be recharged. The higher the capacity the lower that number of recharges will be. Using the original charger that came with your device will allow your device to be recharged (usually) 1,000 times for a lower power device or 500 times for a higher capacity battery. I hope this information helps you understand what was happening to/with your device/battery(ies) and helps you get a longer battery life from your new battery(ies). This information is the same for laptops, tablets, battery packs, portable speakers and anything else that uses a rechargeable battery.

Thanks. it ended up that it did charge it just took a lot longer than usual to get going, I think. I can usually hit the on button on the side just a bit and it will show how far along it's gotten thus far. For that first day, after charging it already for eight hours it still wasn't showing anything and again later that afternoon. Finally, by nightfall it did show that it was charging after all. I've never kept my tablet in my car before, but I think I let it drain all the way out one too many times in a short amount of space or days. I will play with it and see how it goes. Yesterday, I unplugged it while using it and recharged once it got around 50% so it didn't take quite so long.

Wow I really hope the Verizon store can help you with that! I've been wanting to get a tablet but after all the reading I've been doing, I keep coming back to my laptop. My niece has an apple tablet that she loves, but she's had a few problems with that one, too. I wish they weren't so keen on constantly updating and could just give us a product that would last a while. We're not all made of money. They don't seem to realize that fact!

@CRK109 Most smartphones don't need to be drained completely to recharge the battery. D addy E vil knows a lot about these types of batteries if you want to read what he said. I think I was letting mine get too low and therefore it was taking more hours to charge it back up than what it did before.

@MarshaMusselman Sounds like you're on to something. I know with my smartphone, I have to let the battery fully drain before putting it on the charger or else it can shorten the life of my phone. We all need to learn so much more about our electronics. Some of them are just not easy!
