If You Have A Pet, How Can You Eat Meat?

I post on a women's forum where the women can get very catty. One member asked this question,"If you have a pet, how can you eat meat?'. The poster also says she doesn't want anyone to tell her if she doesn't know the answer to that question she is stupid. Like I said the women can be very catty. Well, the conversation had me laughing. So, I had to be a smart mouth. This was my response,"Gosh! I have plants in my house. Yet, I still eat fruits and vegetables. I eat a salad every day." Do you think people with pets should eat meat?

Your response was really smart! I would have said "if you offer me a human meat burger, I'll eat it". Meat is meat, not cuddly, not fluffy... just tasty. But your response was better, plants have feelings too.

Even as a vegetarian I can understand why people eat meat. I didn't give up eating meat because i didn't like the taste!! What I don't understand is why people are quite happy to kill and eat a lamb or a pig or a cow etc. but then find it a disgusting thought to eat a dog or a cat. They're all animals. It's all meat!!

Speaking for myself, I could not eat a cat or a dog because I think of them as pets, not food. I think that is the difference in how people think of eating animals. As I was eating alligator jerky last night. It was good. I did not think of that alligator as a pet.

@rusty2rusty I understand that is the rationale a lot of people use but have you seen a lamb? Cute as any dog or cat! Take pigs. Just as intelligent as dogs, if not more so. When i really stopped and thought about it I knew that I would never consider eating a dog or a cat so why should I make them a special case? In that respect all animals deserve equal treatment in my opinion.

I think it is a personal choice. I was very against people eating meat when I was young. I am not longer but I do not eat meat for my own reasons. I do feel that if people eat one kind of meat they might as well not feel bad no matter what the meat is as long as it's legal. My late husband said if it was legal he would try eating cat as long as he wasn't the one to have to butcher it. He was a huge meat lover and loved animals as well.

I eat meat. Just not my pets. Remember the old joke, "I love cats. They taste just like chicken."

I have had intimate knowledge of the meat I've eaten. The first two lambs we raised were named. Lunch and Supper.....we wanted the children to know from the day they met these cute creatures what their ultimate purpose.

That would be a good way for the children to learn. I remember playing with the chicken. Then helping round them up after their heads were cut off and they took off running and flapping everywhere.

Some animals are meant to be eaten because we already know they taste good. Those are ones some people have as pets. Like pigs.

@rusty2rusty I would not say that some animals are meant to be eaten. I do not believe that any animals are put on this earth for the sole purpose of becoming a meal. I also don't fully agree with the idea of keeping animals as pets.. I'd rather they live natural and free.. but that is not the world we live in, and yes I"m a hypocrit because I have pets.

Lol, I have seen people eat goldfish live. I couldn't do that. I would rather view them in an aquarium.

What does having a pet have to do with eating meat? She thinks that if someone has a pet they can't eat beef or chicken, etc., that it's wrong to do that? That is just weird. Now if she asked something like "if you have a dog for a pet how can you eat a dog?" that would be a different story altogether...

I think they should if they want to. I have pets and I eat meat. I mean it's not like I am eating my dog, cat, or bird. Plus we see dogs, cats, birds, etc. on a different level than we see cows, pigs, chickens, etc.

Human beings eat many things, of course we also eat the meats. I respect those people who eat vegetables only because of their believes or their love for animals. But I can't avoid eating the meats. I just will not eat the animals like cats, dogs and so on. I eat the animals like cow, chicken, sheep, pigs, fish and so on.

That was a good response on your part @rusty2rusty . We are no longer living in the days of Adam & Eve when eating meat would have been a no-no.

Alex(my pet labrador) like chicken and liver. And my family used to raise hogs, chickens and cows. The only thing was we sell them and we never ate any of them because we considered them as pets.

Lol, I grew up on a farm but we ate the animals we raised. After moving out when we grew up, dad decided to give each of us kids a large package of processed cow for Christmas.

And what if the meat is necessary for a person, this has already been proved by science. I had to keep rabbits and slaughter them for meat, since rabbit meat is very useful and necessary for children.

I have no issue with that. I grew up on a farm. My family ate what we raised. We had chickens, goats, cows, and rabbits that we ate. We had horses, dogs and cats we did not eat.
