Vain about my veins.

Greece
April 6, 2017 3:44am CST
Yesterday I lost something I had watched growing longer for as long as 50 years. It had started at the top of my thigh until it reached my ankle and it has grown uglier every year. It is, or was, a varicose vein. Eventually I saw a doctor who said it needed to be removed. So at 8.30 am yesterday the deed was done. I returned with eight little incisions sewed neatly down my leg and a special stocking to cover the eight little plasters and to prevent any side effects. When I go swimming this year my legs will look much better, the rest of me much the same, unless I stick to trying to lose weight in the meantime.

I had heard about varicose veins but did not know that they are removed. Here stockings are provided to keep them in check.

Stockings are available but the doctot advised treatment since it was a very long and thick vein.

Glad the operation wasn't overly painful or anything. I had heard that they are. Glad it's over I bet.

@celticeagle Sometimes the doctor removes the vein, that is stripping. Mine is still there but rendered useless and hardly visible and will eventually dissolve away.

I had been expecting it to be painful too. Perhaps it is painful if thry sre stripped.

Thank you. At present I have no pain and the incisions did not bleed much at all. At least not at the stage when I got to see them.

I don't have this problem but I know women you have or rather had it. They also had their varicose veins removed and are content that they had it done.

I only know of one person who had it done but she told me that she didn't see any benefit! She told me that the night before the operation!

@41CombedaleRoad And what did she say *after* the operation, months later?

@MALUSE it was the night before mine, she had hers done a few years ago.

Is that what they call 'stripping' the veins? I always heard it was very painful. I'm sure you're pleased to be rid of it.

No it was not stripping. It was Endovenous laser treatment. It involved heating the vein and sealing it. In practice the vein is still there, but rendered almost invisible. The doc. said it will disintegrate over time.

@JudyEv it is and maybe if my daughter has problems she might be able to grow a new vein!

@41CombedaleRoad That is amazing. Isn't it wonderful how much more advanced these things are nowadays?

@41CombedaleRoad I think the laser treatment must have made light work of it and you would feel less pain during it.

@changjiangzhibin89 I think you are right about that, there are several ways of dealing with veins and I was given the one I preferred.

They are very small, just big enough for laser heat to be directed through a catheter to the vein. As far as I knew there was only one vein but I have 8 small slits, so I imagine the doc. worked his way down bit by bit!
