Making Postcards

United States

I recently have been making my own postcards. Sometimes on Postcrossing people will request a homemade one. That is exciting for me because I can create a postcard for them. I do all kinds. Some are painted, some are etegami ones and some are like this one, a decoupaged collage. They go through the mail just like regular postcards with very little trouble. Some have to be hand canceled though and that costs a little bit extra. I also send them to friends and family or just swap postcards and often they ask for the card to be sent in an envelope so it will arrive in pristine condition. I like to send them in envelopes because I can add extra things while sending and also decorate the envelope with washi tape and stickers and such. Postcards have been like therapy for me. Every one I receive I keep and study and enjoy over and over. But who knew making them could be so fun!

I have thought about doing this at one time. I do not know whether special media is available for printing postcards from a computer, but they would not be so difficult to make anyway.

You should do it. I often cut postcard sized pieces from throwaway boxes of things like pasta, cereal etc. Then just cut your photo and glue it down. A layer of glue over the picture will also help seal it on top and give it a shine and protect it in the mail. Very inexpensive and so fun to receive.

@Jeanniemaries I was thinking more of designing something on the computer and printing it. Special material is available for printing greetings cards, business cards and many other items, so postcard templates may also be available.

It can really be a fun and interesting thing to do to express your creativity. Are you still painting on a regular basis?

I'm painting in my journals, but this year, I'm going to do more of it. I'm just enjoying the mixed media type of work so much, anything else seems plain.

@Jeanniemaries I think you're better to get up and do something rather than lie in bed worrying about not sleeping.

Thanks! Its something I can do anytime and sometimes it's nice if I'm wakeful in the middle of the night, it's easy to pick up a paint brush or glue stick and not waste time fretting.

That's a beautiful postcard! You can tell a lot about someone by the art the create. The recipients of your cards are very fortunate!
