Change Your Attitude

If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude. -Maya Angelou This is one of my all-time favorite quotes. How do you think you can use this advice to better your life? I use it to do positive work in the community. I live in a town where a large majority of people are below the poverty line. I work with other people in the community to help change the perception of our neighborhood by doing things like block parties or Take pride in your Community Day. Take Pride in your neighborhood day invites residents to come out of their home and work to clean up the neighborhood. It helps people to feel good about an accomplishment, and to feel good about where they live, and to maybe work to make the community a better place for everyone.

Such a great reminder for us. I used to get stressed all the time for things I cannot change. Constantly I have to remind myself that I am not in control of everything and if I allow myself to get stressed by what I cannot control, it would drive me crazy.

In psychology, we often call this voluntary change of perspective "reframing". I think change involves both DOING something different and THINKING differently. A positive outlook and mindset can set off a chain reaction of behavioral change.

This is so true, thinking is not enough. If you are going to think a new way you almost always have to change your actions as well.

You should always do GOOD WORKS. I respect and admire Maya Angelou and often appreciate her quotes. But I really think the first few lines in the Francis of Assisi “Serenity Prayer” are more applicable. ” God grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference. ... If I don't like something I get angry and at times react and later when I cool down I hate myself for reacting. Nothing changes nor my attitude nor the situation.

I wish to go out and join the community however, people nearby are only concerned with gossips. I'd rather stay inside the house. I'm still gathering my strength to make a part of the world at least a little better place to live. :D
