Antique Motorbikes at the Apple Festival

Taking part in the Donnybrook Apple Festival Parade were some vintage motor bikes. My father had a motor-bike when he was young and would take my mother on the back when they were courting. At his funeral, it was mentioned in the obituary that he was probably one of the first to have 'a bird up on his bike'. Do you remember that song? I think the proper title is 'Just for Kicks' and maybe it was written by Mike Sarne. Perhaps one of the music boffins can put me straight on that one. My Dad's bike was a Norton and there was one at the festival. The one in the photo is not a Norton but I can't distinguish what it is – perhaps something Steadman or maybe the second word is Standard.

It's a pretty cool looking bike. My dad had a harley and an Indian when he was young. I also had a motorcycle when I was young but soon gave that up.

I guess at the time they were much cheaper than a car.

@JudyEv The house of my grandparents has not been sold, it is still property of the 4 remaining sons and daughters of my grandparents, my Mom is one of the 4. Everything should have been left in the house, in the garage, cellar and attic, but I know that many things have disappeared.

These old bikes would be worth a lot of money nowadays.

@LadyDuck It is difficult to know what is going to be valuable and what isn't when an estate is being finalised.

My youngest brother is a motorcycle enthusiast, Harleys are his passion. I have only been on a motorcycle once, and when my Dad saw me on the back of that bike he ordered me off of it immediately! And I've never ever been on once since then.

@JudyEv My father would never allow me to date guys with motorcycles. When I went off to college, I rode on a Suzuki and later a huge Harley. Lucky I didn't get killed. Dad never knew.

@DianneN Motor-bikes aren't very forgiving if you have an accident. I did a few things my folks didn't know about too.

Cool antique bike but I am not familiar with the brands, I would assume most of them were U.K. Imports. Popular vintage bikes here are mostly Japanese and American except for BMW,oh yes the Italian scooters Vespa and Lambretta

The antique bikes were interesting to see - as were the huge modern ones. Some would have been very heavy - the new ones I mean. If they fell over you'd never pick them up.

@JudyEv i use to ride a Honda big bike that is vintage now, I rememember it fell to one side slow motion when I was learning to ride it and my untrained legs had no way to stop it, good thing it had a crash guard it did not pin me lol. They are light as a feather when they are running or on the go.

@louievill I rode Vince's motor-bike once and it fell on my leg. Luckily apart from a bruise and a slight burn it was okay. I was going really slowly.

@JudyEv that is great. oh, here in my country, we are having an oil price increase, and a liter of premium gasoline will have an increase of 60 centavos. that is one reason why i do not drive going to work; aside from no space at the parking area, gasoline prices shoot up.

Your dad had a Norton? How very cool. We visited a motorcycle museum when were took a vacation last year to Solvang in northern California. Few if any of the bikes were in working order, but some of them were 100 years old. It was quite interesting. I used to ride when I was younger. I got tired of getting caught in the rain.

It must be cold riding a motor-bike. The riders always seem to really rug up whatever the temperature. Motor-bikes are pretty unforgiving if you have an accident.

@msiduri They keep bringing in more and more rules trying to stop accidents from happening but there will always be some. That's just the way it is really. Always idiot drivers around or mechanical failures or whatever.

No, I do not know that song. My brother had a motorcycle. I loved them when I was younger. Now, on my scooter motorcycles and bikes are my nightmare when I am on the sidewalk and so are they. They come out of no where with no warning whatsoever.

They have to ride on the roads here. You wouldn't seem the on the sidewalks. That could be very dangerous.

We bought a Harley Davidson Street Bob for our first bike. The store had many original older Harleys. Looking at them, seeing the initial designs for motoecycles, and the role motorcycles have played in everything from daily living to war was very interesting.

@JudyEv we do. We don't ride it as much as I'd like but I can't bring myself to sale it. I get sentimentally attached to things and then it's mine forever. Lol
