"The lady earlier donated $40 to charity!" ... Went Grocery Shopping on Easter!

United States
April 16, 2017 9:29pm CST
I called my local Vons/Safeway to ask what time they closed on Easter & they don't! I was surprised. I only needed to go for a few items (tomato, onion & tortilla) but I walked out with a cart's worth! Anyway, what bothered me was the cashier. She kept using her line "The lady earlier donated $40 to charity" in front of every customer instead of saying 'Would you like to donate to charity'? I have no problems donating but that line was getting old! Just like when I went to the dealership to buy touch up paint last month or so! The man on the phone said it was available then when I go there, I just sold it!

That is a turn off indeed. She doesn't know how much you can afford to donate.

Yes, and it felt like she was more pressuring people to donate

At our Safeway, they just ask if you want to donate the spare change. No pressure.

With that, that's understandable. But this lady was going beyond. Four people ahead and saying the same line..

@teamfreak16 I'd like the no pressure route! She was hypocritically though. She was saying, she would never donate $40 because that's half a day of work! Yet told us someone donated $40. I don't know....... and she was ranting how they should close early for Easter.

That guy with the paint should have told you it was only one can that was left.. and he should have taken your name and gone with a first come first serve basis...

@infatuatedbby oh well, there loss. For whatever the reason.. I think he just didn't think to let you know there was only one left, or he didn't actually check and just said there was some left.

If I were in line and kept hearing the cashier say that to everyone, when it came to my turn and she asked me to donate I would just tell that there is no need to since the other lady gave $40.

She said it to 3 people ahead of me. But next time I will ask, how much did she donate? Just because someone in her lane donated $40 doesn't mean She donated that $40!!

@infatuatedbby If I was in line, and she kept saying it over and over to all the people in line in front of me, then I would be sarcastic with her when she finally got to me: "How much did she donate? I didn't hear you the first 12 times you said it." lol

I don't like to be pressured about anything. That was in poor taste, too, to tell how much someone donated!

I think that is rather rude of the cashier. She needs to just as if you would like to donate to charity. Putting pressure on you like that makes me feel like saying No.

Yes, I selected the no thank you button. Next time if anyone does that, I will ask and how about yourself? Did you donate your share!

That's terrible! Both experiences! I don't like to be pressured to give. Giving comes from the heart and not from pressure. It's one of the reasons I stopped going to the Catholic church. The collections made me feel uncomfortable. Some places of worship have a box for donations and no pressure to donate. It was not nice of the salesman not to reserve the touch up paint for you.

I like it when it is not pressured also. When it is pressured, it feels suspicious or weird to be. I dont like it.

Nothing bugs me more then a cashier begging for a tip or donations, I am all for donating to charity but they need to understand some of us don't have extra funds to do so. I indeed donated a dollar when asked for donation and got no thank you I found that so rude sure a dollar is not alot but it is to me when I only have 8$ for the day....

It doesn't help when the lady keeps blabbering her mouth about someone donating $40. That's nice, but she doesn't need to rub it in to every customer in her line. And it made others feel pressured because every person donated afterwords. But what I should have asked was, how much was HER donation. I will donate spare change, or money when I can but when someone is beyond asking is rude! And we have to worry about ourselves also.

Even when I want to give help but when I think they are forcing me the more I would not give. Why? Because is supposed to be from the heart and not from their strategy.

Yeah, I totally am with you. I did give only because I felt like it was pressuring. I would want to help on my own, not by some sort of strategy.

Yes, it worked on the people ahead. But after standing in line and hearing it for over four times, it didn't work on me. it was just not genuine enough for me.

Over the course of Lent I have been buying and setting aside items for the Lenten Mission of collecting food for the Food Bank. I have my 40 items (41 actually) which will be taken to the church next week. I think I probably spent more than 40 dollars on those items. Did I give up anything for Lent? Yes, some food for the needy which cost me who knows how much money. Whose counting? Our grocery store (which was closed today by the way) has paper eggs in the window for those who donated to Easter Seals. Not once over the past few weeks did a cashier ask me if I wanted to donate.

That is very nice of you, thank you for sharing! And by buying and setting items aside to donate is wonderful! This cashier lady kept repeating that someone earlier donated $40, and it made everyone ahead feel pressured to donate. One man said he'll donate $5. The cashier asks are you sure because that's a lot of money on top of your grocery trip.
