United Airlines strikes again!

Unbelievable. Couple on their way to their honeymoon are last to board a half-empty flight and find a passenger stretched across their assigned seats, asleep. Not wanting to wake him they select other empty seat. Near-disaster ensues with their getting ejected from the plane. United says one thing, they say another. Here is a link, make up your own mind. I will never, ever fly United Airlines. http://www.khou.com/news/local/bride-and-groom-booted-off-united-flight-in-houston/431644313

I haven't flown for years. It's just so much trouble with all the taking off of shoes, patting down, inspections and scanning--and that's just for old ladies like me. The ones who fit the terrorist profile just sail on by the TSA while babies, toddler, grandparents, and the disabled get groped and assaulted.

I hope people will stop using them. People pay big money to fly and they should be treat with respect.

That's right. To a lot of people, $200 isn't much but if it's a big amount to me and takes me months to save up. If I use it to buy an airline ticket I don't want to be ejected by sadistic power-hungry flight attendants.

The crew manages it badly. They could have waken up the sleeping guy, ask him to move to another seat, and reclaim the seats for the couple. They could have asked the couple to go to another seat of the same price group too. There is no need to create such a big issue out of nothing. When bad things happen, it always happens in 3. I am sure there will be another incident soon.

That is very strange, the group of 3, but it usually happens that way. I'm just waiting for the next fiasco! United is a very badly managed airline.

@dragon54u The way it will end is usually with the departure of the CEO. The next news after that will be the amount of golden handshake the departing CEO gets for making a mess out of the company.

I would have thought after the recent incident they'd be taking more pains to be a bit customer-friendly.

I don't think they realize what they are doing wrong. They've been this way for years and years.

@dragon54u It seems very strange behaviour for a company depending on the public for its livelihood.

They strike again! Soon their whole company will get a home run to close if this kind of thing keeps up. Maybe they don't mind if they all lose their jobs in the end.

I doubt any other airline would hire them without extensive retraining. They aren't very good at customer service!

@dragon54u There are things that's common sense. No need for training but they fail in that too.

Wow. Just when you thought United wouldn't treat their passengers terribly again after what happened last time. I guess they didn't learn their lesson.

I don't think that they realize they did anything wrong. That's how they normally behave, at least in my limited experience. They all need retraining from the CEO to the flight attendants!

@dragon54u If that's how they normally behave, I'll be sure to never fly United again

I can't copy and paste the link on my tablet so I'll just go by what you said. I'm wondering why the flight attendant wouldn't wake them up so the people could get their seats. I'm also wondering what kind of commotion it caused.

I don't know why it should have caused any trouble. The flight was half empty so they shouldn't care where people sit. The couple chose to sit in a section that cost a little more than the seats they bought and they offered to pay the difference. For some reason, the attendant refused and kicked them off the flight.

There are so many reasons I don't fly. Customer, ahem, "service" is just one of them. I remember a joke from Gallagher: "I went to the counter and said, 'I'm going to Cleveland. Send this bag to Denver and this bag to Dallas.' The lady at the counter said, 'We can't do that!' I said, 'Why not? You did it last week!'" Unfortunately, behind the joke, there is a lot of truth. So my car might be slower (although, given how long ahead of time you have to check in in order to go through security, get processed, board, etc. etc. etc., I can probably drive to Chicago as fast as the "process" of flying), but I'm never bumped, I don't have to worry about the schedule, and if I want to take a nap the blanket and pillow are free!

I agree completely. I'd much rather drive a whole day than fly for a couple of hours. Love Gallagher, he's funny! btw, remember the doctor that got beaten up on United? They lost his bags! Then they delivered them to the wrong address!! I would not be surprised if it was a deliberate act.

As I understand it, the couple offered to pay the additional amount for the other seats, since it was a minor upgrade from the seats they paid for. Why didn't United simply wake up the guy who was sleeping in their seats so they could sit where they were supposed to? Did United make the sleeping guy pay for the two extra seats he was taking up? No, I won't ever fly United unless there is no other option.

I really don't understand their thinking. It's almost as if they search for the most complicated, damaging solution then accept that and refuse to budge. The first incident they could have rented a limo and had their employees in Louisville before or as the plane landed and even saved some money. In this case they could have made some money on upgraded seats. Instead they created more ill will and bad publicity. Thank God the couple were cooperative or we might see a photo of them battered and bloody.

I don't like to fly anymore and it was always too costly to do much of it for me. United has had a problem for years, I know because I flew with them but only once because of the bad experience. And that was at least 30 years ago! They were bad even back then! I'm glad you have had good experiences and hope you never have an unpleasant one. There are many good airlines. Southwest is my favorite because they are relaxed, funny, and really like their job--or they pretend really, really well!

Air Marshalls again?

Air Marshalls are not supposed to be bouncers for the airliners, they are there to prevent terrorism and criminal actions. The couple was peaceful and cooperative by most accounts and I think calling the air marshall was an overreaction.

@dragon54u I would agree. It's ging to be a bit like "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" soon - the air marshall won't come when it's a real situation that needs his/her attention.

All of their employees from the CEO on down need customer service training. They are not fit to be around paying consumers.

That's terrible. I hope they go out of business. If you can't treat your customers with respect and dignity you don't need to be in business.

I think their employees would be happier as bouncers at a bar than someplace they have to be nice.

United has a history of being a cruddy airline. They are so unapologetic about everything too. The last disastrous time I flew them, I told myself I'd gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon before I ever flew with them again.

I love but squirm at that imagery! I flew them long ago and it was miserable. I could not even get a drink of water until the flight was almost finished. The attendant skipped my entire section and when an older person asked for a drink to take his medication with she snapped at him that he wasn't the only one on the plane. The other attendants were pretty much the same way.

@dragon54u sounds about right. The last time I had the misfortune of having to fly them, they cancelled the return flight after telling us for 5 hours it would be soon, offered no compensation at all, not even a meal voucher, refused to book anyone on to another flight, and it was nearly 22 hours before we finally made it home. No apology at all. After complaining to several people they offered my husband a 100 dollar flight voucher to be used within 30 days. We declined.

Ah yes an airline that doesn't know when they have it good. Soon no one will fly United. I would have changed airlines after I read about that poor man being dragged off of a flight.
