Road Trip

Canada

In our old age we don't do the road trip as often as we did in the olden days so when an old friend said he had to do some business by Lake Huron and you need to see this place we said “Sure, we're up for it.” We left Monday morning at 7AM, heading to north and west By the time we old folks needed a potty break it was time for breakfast. Back in the car we went through miles and miles and miles of nothing but fields and farms. It was hours of looking like Kansas where we used to live, and listing to that annoying woman telling us to turn right or left in 3 Kilometers ... My best girlfriend and I sat in the back and chatted and the guys in the front were doing the same so it wasn't that bad, the sun was shining and the clouds were interesting. Our first stop was at a new vineyard. Our friend is a viticulturist who has helped him develop the vineyard and needed to tell him how to prune the plants now that it is spring. It was extremely cold with the wind blowing off Lake Huron. We were freezing!!! We were also seeing hundreds of Wind Turbines everywhere along the shore of the Lake Huron. Our next stop was another new vineyard only this one was at an event resort, they cater to weddings and parties, have a hotel and pool, beautiful buildings and barns and a museum on the place and a brand new vineyard. The men went to the vineyard with the owner and my friend and I checked out the building and enjoyed the beautiful grounds of this interesting place but we were even closer to Lake Huron and we were freezing.. We headed to warmth in the resort. We had a lovely lunch put on by the owners and there was a lot of wine talk going on. It was an interesting day and we were glad we went along for the ride. Our driver got a speeding ticket on the way home and the policeman was gentle with our old friend, his ticket was only $119 instead of $340... Holy molly he was speeding but that $340 is an expensive fee... thankfully he didn't have to pay it all... and he turned on his cruise control for the rest of the way home. It was fun to get out with friends for a day and I think we should do it more often, without the tickets... Where did you go on your last Road Trip? The photo above – the wind turbines that awed us all along Lake Huron, top right is the guys talking vines and showing how to prune, and the photo on the bottom when we got back home to find the trees in the ravine and back yard are blooming. Spring has Sprung in Ontario.

Our last road trip was the ride home from Florida and we did enjoy it, every day is a little different. But of course, we were not with friends, we were alone.

@PainsOnSlate I am way too old to travel that long and Al gets a back ache after about 4 hours so we keep it short and sweet.

I've made that trip with the hubs many times, it is a good trip from Florida but he insists on staying in the car way too long for me. I think that 8 hours is long enough but Mr. hurry to get home thinks 12 is ok - I complain a lot after 8 thinking he will bend sometimes it works sometime it doesn't...

That sounds like it was a fun day-minus the speeding ticket, but it could have been much worse! I love the area up along Hwy 21 and Lake Huron, I like it much more then any area, except for Port Stanley, which is on Lake Erie.

@PainsOnSlate During the hot spells in July, when we experience high humidity levels, my husband and I like to take off to somewhere on Lake Huron. The cool breeze off of that lake is so refreshing. We usually plan a few days each July up there either in Owen Sound or in Midland.

We've only visited Huron a couple of time. Ontario is right out our door (so to speak) and we do go by Erie quite often, usually heading south...

Road trips seem to get old as we get older. Not as interested in doing all of that as we were in our 20s! Tickets: That is ridiculous. $50 would make sense, but to me that would be enough of a reminder.

@PainsOnSlate Speed control can really save the day and may have saved him $119

That ticket was a surprise, He and my husband were gabbing and obviously he wasn't watching his speed. I use my cruise control all the time on the highways, I know I have a lead foot. And I don't want to pay a fine...

I'm glad you had an enjoyable day. Too bad it was so windy and cold. The museum sounds like it would be fun to go through. Too bad about the speeding ticket, but what's a road trip without a small hiccup in it. My last road trip was my trip to Washington Island at the top of the thumb of Wisconsin, accessible only by ferry. It was a great three days exploring that great place. I'm hoping to go back again one day.

@just4him Silly me I just looked at a map to find the name of the area and it wasn't Wisconsin it was Michigan, I flew to a winter ski and paint weekend with friends. It was just across the border from Canada. I have traveled through Wisconsin visiting my now husband when he worked in Minnesota. no stops other than potty and gas.

The trip must have been very fun. I have always wanted to see wind turbines up close. Many people complain that the noise they make is a nuisance. I have no idea if this is true but I am all for renewable energy! From the way you say the wind was whipping off of the lake, sounds like the wind turbines were a good investment. Glad you had fun! Your friends' ticket reminds me of one of my last tickets. I had just gotten the yellow truck in my avatar pic. I took the entire office staff to the beach for the day. I drove on the interstate with the windows and the moonroof and the back sliding glass open. Needless to say, I was not doing the speed limit. Got to the beach and back to town, dropped off all of the folks who went with me and then got a ticket for doing 55 in a 45 right in town! That was an expensive ticket. It could have been worse though. I can just imagine if I had been caught on the interstate doing 95 in the 65 zone...... The last road trip we went on was to Charlotte. Took the kids to the Discovery Place and they had a ball. Going to Charlotte was ok, nice outside and not too hot. Coming back was a total pickle. It was hot and it was a Friday afternoon. Got stuck in major traffic.

@PainsOnSlate Stuck in traffic really is bad when it is hot with no AC. We were fortunate that the kids had fallen asleep. When they woke up we stopped for a nice break with some Icee's.

Getting stuck in traffic is the worst for me. I can't stand sitting and waiting. I'll bet that ticket was frustrating, as I drive down the escarpment I keep forgetting to slow down, that road has given me a couple of tickets. - 10 MPH over...

I cant say I have ever been on a road trip at least not a peaceful one. That is all I will say about that topic lol as of yet. When you said about the wind coming of the lake omg I can just imagine the cold. Going to a winery for a visit would be great sounds lovely tho I cannot drink dang it. I miss it. A speeding ticket is so expensive omg

On our last road trip we went to see my mother in the north of Italy, it's not a very long way, but it takes forever because the road from Switzerland to Italy is crowded all the time.

@PainsOnSlate The line to pass the custom to Italy was about 20 Km long the day before Easter, it takes about 3 hours to cross the border. I stay home on those days.

My last road trip was to Florida last year. Now that we keep a car down there, we fly. I drove cross country with my parents and brothers when I finished 6th grade. I still have such fond memories.

My husband and I Love to get in our car and drive when we can afford too and have the time. Especially when we decide to go find something different and new. But many times we have also gone to Portland, OR for the weekend just for something different. It can be a lot of fun to just get out there and sight see.
