Using Leftover Hot Cross Buns

I don't know about you, but every Easter season I see hot cross buns at the store and I can't resist buying a package. I ate one two weeks age when I bought them but that was it. Hubs ate another one so we had 4 left. Hubs mentioned making it into bread pudding. I have never tried this before but it did seem like a good seasonal idea. I mixed together a cup of milk and two eggs with a little sugar and some rum flavoring. I sliced up the buns and put them in a glass meatloaf pan and covered the slices with the milk mixture. I made sure all the pieces got soaked in the milk. After baking for 45 minutes in a 375-degree oven it was done. I served it with heavy cream and a little maple syrup, it was delicious. I am so glad hubs thought of this, I would have just thrown those stale buns away. Have you ever made bread pudding with an unusual bread choice? Usually, I use Portuguese sweet bread or Challah.

What a great idea. I didn't buy them this year because we only ever eat one each and then they go to waste so now I know a great way to use them up. I will keep that in mind the next time I buy them.

It seemed like the perfect solution so as to avoid waste, I am not sure why I never thought of it before lol

lol yes but stale bread works best for bread pudding, it absorbs more of the milk and egg mixture, it certainly doesn't taste stale.

Using a sweet bun means you add less sugar and get the extra of the dried fruit

Yes it is a good idea to use sweet bread since you need to use less sugar in the custard.

@BelleStarr So true, I even use the Italian cake called "Panettone" and I use no sugar at all. Served with a warm vanilla sauce it's excellent.

@mom210 Yes I have done that for years first for my kids and then the grandkids. I bought a whole bunch of hoodies from Kohls for next Christmas already. Got 70% off, can't argue with that.

@BelleStarr yes and I do love when they make down those unsold holiday items too. Sales are so wonderful for stretching the budget. We do that for our clothing too, buy them in the "off"season. I have gotten pretty good at guessing how much the kids will grow between seasons.

Hot Cross buns don't do much for me but I can usually manage one. This is a great idea for using up the rest.

I hate being wasteful and making bread pudding is a good way to get rid of any leftover bread or pastries.

I have only known it with standard bread, but hot cross buns does sound an excellent alternative. Of course if they were left overs then surely they would have become slightly warm cross buns.
