Reliable Workers and Job Hunting

Philippines
April 20, 2017 2:12am CST
A relative finally found a carpenter for us, so repairs have started last week. But one day they did not show up, so we got a little worried. Our relative had no idea why. When they reported the next day, the assistant said it was because he had to enroll for Grade 7. What a relief! Have you ever had a worker abandon a job? Someone in my family started job hunting this summer, and was finally accepted. He didn't know that an older relative is also an employee there for several years now. They were surprised to see each other the next day. I, too, would prefer to be accepted based on my own merits. Did you ever get hired with the help of an insider?

I have always been hired without recommendations from the inside. But peoplw tend to trust the recommendations and the job hunting works mostly with them over here.

it's practiced here, too. sometimes it helps speed up hiring, and the employee is a good fit.

@hereandthere It does speed up hiring but then it is harder to let them go if they are not a good fit. In my boyfriend's workplace, they recently hired an engineer that was a recommendation and he wasn't that good. But even if they are not happy with his performance, they prefer not to let him go. In my opinion, if they had followed the typical hiring process, they could have found someone that was more willing to work hard and improve inside the company.

@besweet here there is usually a five-month probationary or contractual period, then you are assessed. you are either regularized or let go.

My father has a preferred set of carpenters. Most of them built our house many years ago. One of them installed my TV bracket. We encountered undesirable results before and we don't hire workers again who gave us a bad impression the first time.

there is a carpenter here who is really good, but never runs out of projects, so we can only call on him for plumbing problems because he can do those jobs during his lunch break or day off.

I've known co-workers to abandon their jobs . . . just completely quit one day without warning. I haven't experienced abandonment for projects for home, but I have had worker come extremely late. I've never had help from an insider . . . I've always gotten the jobs by myself!

@hereandthere Was it a good or bad thing? I just thought of this. I have a friend whose family lives in the Philippines. They are Chinese - a big family - and apparently they have done very well with a market the parents started there. All the kids were working it and then took over the business as they got older - instant "career". But not my friend. He had no interest in doing this with his life. He wanted to make his own success - he didn't want to be "handed down" a job through family. So he actually came out here to go to high school and college and have his own career - and hey, he did it!

@much2say i usually give 15 to 30 days notice and worked until the last day. at that office, something happened that made me not go back and just emailed and mailed my resignation letter. families with chinese blood here usually have a business and everyone helps. how did he make it there that young?

That's my problem working in the government agency before. I think nepotism should be stopped. I am not against of hiring an employee referred by an insider as long as it is qualified.

@hereandthere It is not evident in other areas, my friend. It is so common in my city.

@hereandthere I think there is nothing wrong with that. In some companies, it is not allowed. In that case, it is an honest way of having the job.

i asked my aunt how my cousin was able to work at a government agency. she said her classmate learned about the opening and suggested to my cousin that they apply together. ironically, it was my cousin who got accepted and is still working there.

We had one worker put in French doors from our foyer to our living room. He never asked for his pay, even after multiple attempts at calling him. Another worker put built an addition and built a new deck, but never claimed the final payment. He was too busy building new homes I guess.

@hereandthere Luckily no, my husband has quite an extensive network of tradesmen who can be trusted. But yes, I have heard problems people have down here with them. Mostly how they charge very high for their services yet the work done is not quite satisfactory.

@sishy7 sometimes the problem is either they want to do it their way, or they follow your idea/instruction knowing it will be problematic later on.

maybe it's cultural, but sometimes, it's easier to give instructions or correct strangers." with people you have a personal relationship with, it could lead to resentment.

Never. In my current and previous jobs, I was hired because of my qualifications. I never used the help of an insider and I never applied in offices where friends of my parents work.

only my father worked in an office, and he was able to help others find a job, but we siblings struck out on our own.

There are times when I wish someone would have a little more experience and belief in what I am doing, and want to hire me because of that... but then you might get more than you can handle. I have always been one to believe it is Best to get a job on your own, because then if you disappoint or do not like it, there is no one else someone can try and blame it on.

Yes, we once hired a painter who did not show up the next day after he was admonished by my husband because his job was not satisfying. Oh well, we felt good when he did not because he was really not a good one.

Did you find another carpenter? It is very difficult to find good jobs these days and also good workers.
