I know it happened a few days ago already - but April the giraffe finally had her calf. I know people had been following her for months, but I first became aware of her about a month ago. Actually, I became aware of April in a really odd way. On my social media account I saw a video clip of a heavily pregnant woman, wearing a realistic giraffe mask. The woman was pacing about, stretching, etc. I had no idea what it was all about, until someone told me that the world had been watching April, a pregnant giraffe - via webcam. I didn't follow April extensively - though I had friends who did. There was something peaceful about watching the tall mammal walk around her pen, socialize with Ollie (the giraffe in the next stall, her "boyfriend") and watching her interact with the keepers that would come in and check on her. I didn't watch the birth, live. To be honest, I don't know how I feel about that. Part of me wanted April to have privacy. On the other hand she's a giraffe - and doesn't know the concept of camera, or people watching her. April's calf is a male and the zoo is holding a fundraiser. For $5 you can suggest 5 names for the calf. If it were a girl my suggest would have been May, or June. I really like keeping with the idea of months - so for this male calf - I think August/Auggie or Jan/January.... What is your opinion of April Giraffe? What would you name the calf?

April probably already have a name for her baby giraffe ..lol .. but since the mama giraffe was named after a month, maybe the baby can be named after the day of the week she was born ..

My question is how long did it take April to give birth - and is the length of time normal?

I think once she came into labor it was only little over an hour. However during my stint of following her - I learned that giraffes can be pregnant up to 15 months. Wow!

I saw the pregnant lady video for 1 minute then stopped it was stupid in my opinion. Also barely paid attention to april, as noone knew when she was going to have the baby and wasn't wasting my time watching a giraffe stand around . Lol

I've been faintly aware of the great giraffe story, but didn't really know what was about until I saw the news the other morning

@FayeHazel for me I'll go with 'Pril' since the calf was born in April, I mean you wouldn't want repetition of names now would you?

And 'Pril is so much nicer than Ape (since it's a giraffe and not a Monkey) lol
