Couch Potato to the Ski Slopes in Four Days

Strangely enough, when I googled that today I did not find the information I needed. The closest I could find was to be ready in 3 weeks. So, I read that one. 50-40-30-20-10 which translates as 50 sit ups I thought sit ups were not suggested any more? 50 Box Jumps I have never heard of a box jump Then 40 sit ups, 40 box jumps Then 30 sit ups, 30 box jumps 20 of each then 10 Holy smokes, that is day one for a couch potato? I did 18 side to side jumps and decided my knees won't benefit from jumping before skiing. Then I googled to find out what a box jump is and decided it's a good idea after all to practice a few. So in all I have done 3 sets of 18 jumps. A box jump is jumping on to a box. So I get the exercise of jumping while decreasing the impact as I land on the box. (very low porch by the shed actually) Now, I will do some Yoga and skip the sit ups. Riding my bike is much better for strengthening my legs without hurting my knees but the road is still too muddy! Ready or not, Monday I hit the slopes! It will be beautiful mountain scenery at least!

It sounds dangerous to jump on top of a box unless it is a solid wooden box, I will continue walking and riding my recumbent bike.

@paigea The recumbent bike is very well to use when it's too cold outside, or it rains. Jumping can damage the knees, especially after a certain age, it's better to be careful.

I thought the same. The wooden porch in front of our shed was just right for me to jump onto. Very solid. But really for me there must be better ways to strengthen my legs. Cycling is what I have found is best for me. I have never tried a recumbent bike. They look interesting.

@LadyDuck so the recumbent bike is inside? Small jumps are kind of part of skiing. The box jump is kind of good for me as the effort goes into jumping up, then the down part is small as I land on the porch. But really I should practice the jump and land in a swimming pool, or on a trampoline.

So, it's not too late up your way to do some more skiing? Since you didn't share about it much this winter I thought all the snow was gone by now although I do know a lot of ski places make their own when the real stuff is non-existent. Do you usually get a bit more skiing in this late in the season?

@paigea So if it's warm enough you don't have to wear all the outer gear? Is this the first time you're heading to the sloped this winter?

This particular resort (Sunshine Village) always stays open until our long weekend in May which is around May 24th, this year it is May 22. They close then because not enough people want to ski. They have tons and tons of snow. It is nice to spring ski as it is warmer (generally) and so much more daylight.

@MarshaMusselman We actually went one weekend as we were joining family. Otherwise we would have just gone the once. You certainly can wear a lighter jacket, lighter long johns, lighter gloves, etc. I have seen people ski in shorts and tee shirts but I need my ski pants for when I fall!

That was quite a workout to get ready for the ski slopes. I don't think my knees would take the jumping. Did you have fun?

@paigea Maybe squats or climbing stairs would help.

Skiing was fun. But I do need to think of a way to strengthen my knees as they bothered me the whole time we were skiing.

I want to go skiing! It's not something us Floridians get to do all that often! Unless you count water skiing! haha

@paigea Vermont is probably a couple thousand miles from where I live! If I start jogging now, I might make it to Vermont just in time for next winter! And my legs would be in great shape! lol

Water skiing would keep you sort of fit for snow skiing. How far is Vermont?

I think it's safe to say that I will never indulge in a spot of skiing if it involves that much preparation! Enjoy!

@paigea Doing several reps of leg lifts while on a flat surface will help your thighs too, but it's better to begin working on the preparation long before the week prior. I've also been trying to remember to do squats holding onto the sink in the kitchen and I can feel that in my thighs too. I had one day when I hurt like crazy the next day after doing them, but since then it's been fine.

@MarshaMusselman Exactly, should be keeping in better shape all the time just to feel better. But, for sure I should have started preparing for this much sooner. I will try the squats while holding onto the counter. That is a good idea. And the leg lifts. I stopped at the outdoor gym while doing errands yesterday and worked on a couple of the machines. I am being careful not to make myself hurt just ahead of going skiing.

One should be somewhat fit. My husband never gets sore after skiing as he keeps fit. So, no extra preparation for him. I find my thigh muscles are screaming at the end of the first day!

A stationary bike is the best alternative when the road is too muddy.

@TiarasOceanView Second hand equipment. Cheap accommodations. Cook all our own meals. And buy a spring pass that lets us ski lots of days for a good rate. (compared to buying ticket day by day)

@paigea So, what holiday is it exactly for you up there in Canada?
@paigea (35691)

@MarshaMusselman Just our second annual ski holiday. We used to try to get to the mountains to ski several times every winter. Last winter we decided to buy a spring ski pass(costs about the same as 6 days skiing) And ski for a month. This year we are only going for 3 weeks. A slightly more economical way to enjoy skiing. Less travel and less spent on the lift passes.

@RubyHawk It is rare that people break their leg these days. The parking lot was icy this morning so I was wondering if that would result in some injuries to people before they even got up the hill.

I know what you mean. I used to walk so much and it was good for me, but didn't do much for my upper body strength! I love walking, but brisk walking doesn't agree with my knee so I have been trying to cycle more in the summer time.
