An easy way to avoid processed foods

Many people are trying to improve their diets these days and want to try to eliminate processed foods from their meals. This is a good idea because processed foods are full of fat, sodium, and all sorts of chemicals. The easiest way to avoid processed foods is to shop along the outside edges of the grocery store. You'll find yourself buying fruits and vegetables, seafood/meat/poultry, and dairy. See how easy that was? You will need to go up a couple of aisles, though. In my local grocery store I can get dried pasta, canned tomatoes, flour tortillas, and canned beans all in one aisle. I grab the canned tuna, extra virgin olive oil, and mayonnaise in another. Then I'm done. Not everyone can be as strict as I am with eliminating processed foods, but there certainly is room in everyone's diet for improvement! The key is to think about buying "ingredients" rather than whole meals, sandwiches, soups, etc. Then you can make those meals yourself and control exactly what goes into them. They will be much healthier and more cost-effective for you! Go ahead and give it a try. Do you buy ingredients or ready-made foods?

A little of both, honestly. A lot of stuff we could buy she can make cheaper and better.

I used to shop for convenience when I lived alone, I was so tired of cooking. But when my granddaughter was born everything changed. I saw what processed foods did to people and I'm still upset at the obesity/ADD/other "diseases" that afflict our children. I think most of it is caused by the chemicals and additives in the food we feed them. I live with my DIL and granddaughter. As her grandma, I want the best for her and so does her mom. We don't feed her processed foods. We cook it all from scratch and my DIL is learning to cook the way my grandma did. No gravy mixes, no drink mixes, no soda, very little refined sugar, no store bought cookies, no chicken nuggets, no boxed mac 'n cheese. So you are right, shopping around the edges is how we do it. She is healthy, alert, very smart, can think through problems with logic and creativity. People remark on how articulate she is, and tall and healthy. You look at her alongside the kids at the park and there is a huge difference.

I'm lucky that I have plenty of time so I don't need to try to shortcut anything

See I know how to cook but I am getting older and I dont feel like cooking. I have loved the raw way of eating, vegan and full meat, the vegetarian way of eating made me thinner and feel better...Now to WANT to cook.

I try to stick to the outside of the store as much as possible. Its cheaper for fresh food too, or at least it is for what we get.

I think it is a mixed way of having a perfect meal. It is more on spices needed to complete the meal.

Good idea. I don't buy nor eat American cheese or white bread anymore. Same here for my shopping. I buy some ready-made meals for nights I go to the gym.

@NJChicaa Oh I see. It's different than a crockpot. I brought a freebie cookbook for an Instant Pot. Not sure if I can use it for a crockpot. I understand. I eat Healthy Choice, Lean Cuisine and Smart Ones. They're all healthy.

@NJChicaa ha ha ha ha. It's kinda challenging given I am a meat lover. I am still going through it and I hope this would help me lose some lbs
