The last two Saturdays in April, I will be going on college visits with my third oldest granddaughter, who is a junior in high school. Our oldest granddaughter graduated a year ago from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles; our second oldest granddaughter is a senior at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Now it is time for our third oldest granddaughter to decide which college she will attend. This granddaughter is good at math and would like to be a teacher. Two colleges in our area have excellent programs for education ... the University of California in Irvine and Cal State University in Fullerton. We are going to visit both of them over the next two Saturdays. I always love it when one of our grandkids is going to a college near us. It means we get to see them more often! My oldest grandson, who is just finishing up 8th grade, may go with us, although he is hesitant. The other day he said to me, "Nana, I think I need to get ready for high school, before I worry about college." (LOL) Whether or not our grandson tags along, it will be fun to go on these college visits. When our daughters were growing up, we visited dozens of colleges while they were deciding which schools they wanted to attend. About five years ago, I also went on college visits with my two oldest granddaughters. I think I could be a college advisor, I've visited so many of them, coast-to-coast ... every place from Harvard, MIT and Columbia to University of Texas and many small private colleges!

We went today, and it was a lot of fun. Our grandson came along and, by the end of the day, both grandkids said that UCI was definitely on the list of places where they will want to apply for college. Yay!

It is important to visit first and to decide after a good evaluation of what is the best choice. I hope she will be to a college near you.

@LadyDuck - Thank you! She will not be able to apply until December, but at least now she knows where she wants to apply. We will visit more colleges, too.

@LadyDuck - I am hoping that she ends up at a college near us, too. At the very least, I hope she stays in Southern California. Then we will be able to see her regularly. She loved today's visit to UCI and said she plans to apply there ... although they accept less than 10% of their applicants.

My grandchildren have years to go before they begin to look at colleges. However, I loved it when we went looking at them with our son's, too. We visited Stanford and UCLA out your way, Johns Hopkins, Yale, Harvard, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, Hamilton, Tufts, U. Of Michigan, and a few others. We had such fun weekends away together.

I agree that looking at colleges is interesting and a lot of fun. Over the years, with different daughters and granddaughters, we looked at Harvard, Duke, Columbia, Yale, Princeton, MIT (where one of our son-in-laws did his post doc), Washington & Lee (which one of our daughters attended), U of Texas (which one of our daughters attended), Loyola Marymount (where a granddaughter went) and various public and private university campuses in California where a couple of daughters and one granddaughter went. We also visited a number of other colleges in other states. I never fail to learn something new, and I think it is great for our children and grandchildren to visit a variety of campuses before making a final decision.

@DeborahDiane How wonderful that you have visited several colleges. Our eldest granddaughter joined UCLA last year. She got admissions to several colleges including Rice University and UPenn. She also got full scholarship at Rutgers. However, we dissuaded her from going far on the East Coast. She will soon be coming home in the hols. We wish your grandchildren great success in their academic years ahead.

@Gabugs - Congratulations to your granddaughter! We visited UCLA with one of our older granddaugters six years ago. She ended up attending and graduating from Loyola Marymount, and loved her years in Los Angeles ... although now is back living and working in the Napa Valley, where she grew up. Your granddaughter sounds very bright!

@Hatley - I hope our granddaughter gets into University of CA at Irvine. She lives near that campus and it would be the best solution for her. She could live at home and go to school
