Other Things Just Get in the Way

Smooch letting nothing get in the way.

I don't mean things just getting in the way of being on myLot, though that is often a challenge too. No, what I mean is life in general getting in the way of writing. I have a wonderful week ahead of me, with three scheduled writing commitments. I feel as if I'm in heaven. On Wednesday I meet with my writing buddy. We do this about once once a month to share progress on our writing projects and give each other support and constructive feedback. On Thursday I meet with others in the memoir group I belong to, again another monthly meeting. And on Saturday I hope to be going to my writing marathon group, though other things are interfering with that at the moment. Then of course there's myLot and a couple of blogs I contribute to. So how can any reasonable person expect me to do housework, weed the garden, cook meals and do all the other daily and weekly tasks we all seem to attract into our lives? Those other things can tend to get in the way of writing at times, but fortunately I have a wonderful husband.

There are so many things that must be done, then so many more things we want to do and just not enough hours ever to get to all of it!

As I get older I'm more inclined to do what I want to do rather than what I should do!

@valmnz Yeah, let's leave dust bunnies behind for others to gossip about! Life is too short not to do what we want to do.

So, does your wonderful husband help you with the tasks other than writing, or does he just not give you a hard time if you don't get them done? My husband is the latter type of wonderful husband. It would be nice if he'd help a bit more than he is at present, but... He used to do a bit more but his leg has been bothering him with blisters and a couple of sores all in the same general area. My sisters ex on the other hand would give her grief if she left a couple of dirty dishes in the sink all day long. He was quite controlling in more ways than one. I hope you're able to get to all your writing engagements.

My wonderful husband puts up with me and helps me when he can. Unfortunately he can't do as many of the things as he used to do, but he tries. He is also patient when I ask him to read and comment on a piece of writing.

@valmnz I'm supposed to be reading through my husband's book while I'm off, but I only have one more month of freedom before heading back to cashiering, and I've not looked at it yet. Just remembered that when you talked about him listening to what you've written.

@MarshaMusselman At least I gave my husband mine in installments! I don't think he's actually read the whole thing since it was published.

Smooch's only cares are where to sleep, when to eat, and who will fuss over him today.

@valmnz You will go at the pace you are best at Val. I used to hate being told to slow down it was impossible for me, now I relish it haha

Too many things to do, too little time to do everything: I would love to have a robot to take care of all the tasks I hate, like mopping the floors, dusting, washing the dishes. Very nice photo of my friend Smooch.

I always ask, why doesn't the dusting last longer than it does, it seems as soon as I've done the housework it needs doing again.

@valmnz This is the reason why I hate dusting, after a few hours you should restart, it seems a nonsense job.

It's just turned out that the busyness of my writing life is what I now love most. I never planned it this way. However, I'm living true to my belief that in retirement we should choose to do the things we enjoy most.

Are people really receptive to criticism? Have you heard any of my songs? I say I want constructive criticism, but sometimes I fear I really want praise.

@TheHorse I shall listen to your song when I return later. I don't write fiction, I write memoir mostly and explore social history.

I said constructive feedback, not criticism. My writing buddy and I have areas of expertise each of the other lacks. We both tend to point out where something could possibly be improved, or different if we were the writer.

@valmnz For me, the issue is plot. I love writing, but I'm not convinced my plots are all that great. Here's a song I wrote. Vanny and DJ (from MyLot) posted it.
