I'm still working

Okay, it is known that I do not have a job. I do little side things to get pocket change but that is it. I was speaking to a friend and he asks me "What's up" Which I answer, "Working on a character design" And he replies, "That is cool. Are you doing any work?" A typical conversation, it is fine, I don't speak to this person that often so I reply with, "I am working on a graphic novel at the moment, that is my work, I just do not get paid." And they go, "That isn't work, that is just laziness." Excuse me? Sure it can be seen as lazy, but I am still doing side things for money, I don't make a typical paycheck but it is enough to say that I am saving up. That is so rude, I am a writer, of course it is working. I am creating a world. I may not be working out of home, I may not be doing a desk job, or bagging groceries, but I still consider it working because one day I will get paid for it. But I am not concerned about that right now, my main focus is working and creating a story people will love.

Who are these friends of yours anyway? I wonder about them. Obviously they don't know the work that goes into writing and design.

I'm sure you will find it, and I think he was rude too, I would not be kind to that comment. I hated working outside of my studio and knew some day I'm not only going to be famous but my work will sell, it has always sold but the better I get known and the more demand there is for my art the prices go up..There is nothing wrong with being DesirousDreamer...

It is just people who do not understand anything other the mundane life. We are artists! We dedicate our lives to our work

I mean i see both sides of it. As i dont have a job either but babysit for family and friends, which i get paid a little bit for. Plus sell avon. And you are busy doing it. But until you get money for it.. i wouldnt consider it work . But everyone sees things differently and theres nothing wrong with that.

It is work though, it is called freelancing haha it is not a profession if you don't get paid. But it is work. You can work on the yard, paint the house, cook a meal, that is still technically working, it is toil, not a career. Internships, most do not get paid, that is still work though.
