Where have I been all my life? I never heard of this coming of age novel by S.E. Hinton, and am not really familiar with the 1983 film. This had a cast of boys who later became stars including Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe and Matt Dillon. I think this novel was nearly as famous as Catcher in the Rye. Not on my radar until today! Have you heard of this or seen the movie?

I saw The Outsiders when it fairly new. In retrospect it was an all star lineup of future notable stars. If you liked it, try Rumble Fish which is from another Honton book. Stars Matt Dillon and Nicolas Cage. Both movies are directed by Francis Coppola.

gonna have to catch that one..I bet it shows up on TCM. It might even be on Netflix.

@amadeo Yeah, I'll look. I mostly watch TV shows on Netflix..it is a little hard for me to find movies I like on there, although I have seen a few good ones..Spotlight was awesome..but I knew it would be.

They were..Tom Cruise was standing next to Lowe. Lowe and Cruise I think are about the same age, and Lowe said he turned 18 on the set.

@just4him Emilio Estevez is in the front as well. Ralph Macchio is in it too..I believe.

can make out Swayze but not the others. I haven't seen this movie.There was another book along with salinger's...Ordinary people which shook me up. It was a film too.

Yeah, I saw Ordinary People, it was good, The Outsiders was more of a coming of age kind of movie though..with a certain degree of class warfare.

I must have been hiding under a stone too as I had never heard of it although in fairness I am not a great film fan!

Love this story and loved the movie. What a great cast! And I just saw the author on TV over the weekend, so it was very interesting hearing how she came to write this when she was only in high school!

From the little clip I saw, it had some great performances, Rob Lowe was very good in it. He said on TV if he hadn't gotten the part, he was ready to hang up acting.
