That can't possibly be your grandson!

I was in the elevator earlier and we stopped to pick up passengers at a lower floor. A lovely young woman stepped in with a little boy. He was so adorable and kept staring at me, so I smiled and began talking to him. He got really shy at first, but she let him know that it was okay to talk with me and so for the rest of our ride down we had a fun conversation. As we exited the elevator car, someone else asked her who this adorable little boy was. She said, "Oh, this is my grandson!" I stopped and my mouth just about hit the floor. This woman looked like a kid! I turned around and said to her, "That can't possibly be your grandson! You're WAY too young!" She just began laughing and thanked me and I told her that she must have found the Fountain of Youth somewhere. She and her grandson waved goodbye to me and I went off out another door, shaking my head. You really just never know! Claudia

sometimes it's because of early pregnancy, sometimes long gaps between children, sometimes remarriage. but it was so gracious of her to let the boy interact with the other adults.

A lot of people said that to me when I was a grandmom in my 30's. It felt good when people said that.

It is hard to judge now a days! Sometimes I don't want to use the wrong phrase and offend people, but there are lots of young grandmas, mothers, etc now a days!

@CRK109 Heheh, I wonder what her secret was to maintain such a young appearance. :)

It's always to assume people are younger than they are. But in this case, I seriously thought she was a kid!

My friend had her first child at 15. Then one of her sons had a child young. It can happen!

Some people age very well and never look their age. I'm glad you had a good conversation with the little boy.

When my oldest grandchild was born, everywhere I took him, people thought I was his mom. No one suggests that now when I go out with Sandra.

It had to be such a great feeling! Either way, being a grandparent must be such a blessing.

And then there are parents like me, I had my kids late in life and one of my son's friends asked if I was his grandmother lol. That day I started to dye my hair.

That was my mother. She had me at 42 and people often thought she was my grandmother. I felt so badly for her, but I learned to tell them loud and proud that NO, she's my MOTHER! lol

@CRK109 Apparently when his friend asked him he laughed and told him no that's my mom. My sons are greatly loved and had a stable home which many of their friends did not. So there is something to be said for older parents.

It's hard these days to tell someone's age I think, harder than it used to be.

Some women look very young for their age - especially when they are small boned.
