MALE OR FEMALE?

Has this ever happened to you? - well it happened to me back at my former site and the same problem has arisen here. I may be commenting back and forth on a member's discussions while under the impression that I am interacting with a male or a female - then something they write would alert me to the fact that the member is of the other sex. I feel rather silly when this happens. For privacy reasons, not showing one's true self in a profile pic is understandable - but a short bio on the profile page would indeed be helpful. What do you think?

I wrote a similar post a long time ago, and my suggestion was that they have a simple F or M on the profile page. That would stop any misunderstandings.

@Kandae11 Yes, if they would put that initial right next to our names on our profile page it would be great.

That is a very good idea, - but it seems no one listened. This one should serve as a reminder.

Agree. Ive questioned which gender some people here are because of not having their picture up, and names not being helpful.

@Kandae11 i know just saying some have names that could be or male or female so it doesnt help, when the picture isn't of a person

They won't have to put pictures - a short bio should suffice.

I have not included any profile picture or bio. I had people mistaking me for a male. I guess i will have to write a short bio. Thank you for this discussion

Sometimes we can guess from the discussion - but not always.

@Kandae11 I wish it was mandatory for us to mention our gender.

@allknowing These sites try not to put too much pressure on members - which is good in a way.

I have made this mistake as well and then feel kind of silly. I do wish everyone would say if they are male or female. Some of the names say opposite of their actual gender.

I ran into that with one person in particular. The photo is very masculine so I 'assumed'.... It is up to each one if they want to put a bio or not and how much to announce.

@Kandae11 People are weird. Heck, I don't use my real name so I'm weird too.

@AbbyGreenhill A username I would consider a different matter - almost everyone does that.

That is true - we do have a choice. Somehow I didn't think disclosing if you are male pr female would be a big deal for anyone - maybe I was wrong.

It might help,,,it is usually pretty easy to pick up from the name whether you are talking to a man or woman though. I did get confused once this week though..It turns out I was right, but I thought I was wrong.

It cannot be easy to pick up from a username - but a regular name - yes.

Yes, it's happened to me also. I like when there is a picture, it make s it easy to now. If they are concerned about privacy, they can get a picture on Pixabay.

@Kandae11 Or, we can give ourselves a name that reflects our gender even if it is not our real name.

it would only work if people actually read bios.

I think they would - if they are uncertain and want to be sure. That is the first place I would check - but unfortunately I can still come up with a blank - because many times you find that there is no bio.

I haven`t yet been in such a situation but you are right. Although we use avatars we should find a way to indicate our gender to avoid confusion.
