Long Ago, I Was On A TV Show

For any of you who are in their early to mid 50s like I am and live in Georgia, do you remember a TV show in the late 1960s called "The Mr. Pix Show"? It was a local show for kids shown on CBS affiliate WAGA Channel 5 in Atlanta. It aired everyday through the week and on Saturday on the weekends. It was hosted by WAGA News Anchor Dave Michaels and he was called Mr. Pix because he would draw out famous cartoon characters and give tips to kids on how to draw them. The week day shows aired for 30 minutes and had no kids on it. The Saturday show aired for one hour and had kids on the show. He would lead the kids in games, watching cartoons and contests. At the end of the weekend show, it would tell parents how they could get their child onto the show. I watched the show on our little black and white TV and I liked it. My Mom wanted to get me onto the show, so she registered me. I was around age 4 or 5. I remember the day came and my Mom drove me to the Studio in Atlanta. We lived in Stone Mountain at the time, so it was a little bit of a drive. I have vague memories of seeing Mr. Pix and the group of kids. The main thing I remember was one of the games that was played. It was Musical Chairs and the reason that it was my main memory of that event was because I was the first kid out of the game. I still have feelings of being upset that I was out of that game so soon. But, the whole memory of getting to be on TV where a whole bunch of people were watching, was a good memory.

Oh such a nice memory for you Anne. That is really great that you got to be on there. I remember those kids shows like that, but not that particular one, guess it wasn't on in the state I was in. What a nice thing your Mom did too to register you. Too bad you don't have a tape of it huh?

Yes, it would have been nice to have a tape of it, but that was way back in the day before easy recording was so easily accessible as it is today.

I lived up north then so I know I didn't see it. I was on a local kid show in Baltimore many years ago - but I can't remember many details and now no one to refresh my memory is left. Isn't Stone Mountian where the handbags are made?

What particular handbags are you referring to? There is the mountain everyone has heard of that is a tourist attraction. There is also a whole city around it called Stone Mountain. I lived there until I was 8, when my family moved into the city of Atlanta.

When you talked twice on the radio, how long did you speak?

@LeaPea2417 Once I told a story about an animal. The moderator made a kind of interview out of it. It was interrupted by a song or two. I don't remember how long the whole thing lasted. The other time I was a member of a group. We were interviewed on a learning programme which had been broadcast on the radio and which we had participated in.

Sounds like a neat experience. I am sure that any child at that age would have felt a bit disappointed at being the first out. Do you have a recording of the show?

No recording of the show, though there are two brief clips on YouTube. Those two clips are taken from other episodes.

sounds fun, though sad that you lost the game - not heard of the show as it probably never aired in the uk

I do not believe I ever saw that show. I never wanted to be registered for TV shows.

You telling this story reminds me of one of my own to share. Nowadays people seem to be on the news as the news nothing fun like your experience.

No, I never studied acting. The only thing I ever did was have a bit part in my High School Senior play and a bit part in a play that my College put on. Those two things were the only things I ever acted in.
