Volkswagen is required to pay 2.8 billion dollars for cheating on emissions tests. This was announced by a federal judge in Detroit, Michigan. Who gets that money? Do you get a portion of this? There is also a civil case that requires Volkswagen to pay 1.5 billion dollars to a government agency. The photo here was taken by me of one of our dogs not driving a Volkswagen If any money is owed to you as a Volkswagen owner, be sure you get your money! Somehow we think the billions will just disappear, and many such cases do seem to eat up all the funds. Lawyers, court costs, etc. are often used as the reason there is no money for you, the consumer. What do you think will happen with the funds Volkswagen pays?

I think that this amount is what they have to pay as a fine to the Government due to the fact they cheated. Only the users who sued VW will eventually get some money, not the others.

The attorneys take a huge chunk (as allowed by the courts) and money remaining will be in an account by the government until everyone is paid-or at least that is what is supposed to happen @LadyDuck

@PatZAnthony Even it this was a "class action" only who joined and signed are supposed to get money. This is how has worked for any class action in the past.

Never really gave it a thought. I would assume it would be the people they cheated.

@PatZAnthony So much money is wasted. They should have settled out of court and everybody would be ahead.

@1hopefulman The attorneys would not want that! They rec'd a huge paycheck for this.

People who are entitled to some compensation will get part of the money, we know that much. However, @1hopefulman it seems to be a huge amount of money just for the fines/court fees, doesn't it?

I donĀ“t own such a Car and we have not heard anymore of it since it all came out on the News. No one has said a word not one word at all. Hope they do get paid though wherever they are.

@PatZAnthony We do think that this is the problem here also as no one is mentioning that they have got paid. A lot of Fairy Stories told by the News that the money is being handled well and that is about it.

Yes, we are hoping also that those deserving money get theirs and it is not sitting in an account held by a government agency.

I'm sure a class action suit will get some money to someone, but I truly have no idea.

We always wonder about the fines, etc. that are consider court costs. Attorneys get a good bit, but if there is money left, which agency gets that @DianneN We've heard several things over the years and some answers don't make sense.

@PatZAnthony All I know is that we were part of a class action suit years ago and were awarded money. You have a good point there, however.

I would imagine all who owned them will get a notice and some money. Sometimes you have to file for it. My parents had to file for a John Hancock Insurance fraud compensation and my dad did and my mom said she didn't believe anyone would get anything and didn't file. My dad got 20K. My mom was very upset with herself for not filing. I have filed for several and never have seen any money. Our first car was a VW.

We filed for one years back and got $ @Jeanniemaries Can imagine your mom would have been hugely upset! What we wonder is where will any leftover funds go? All of these fines go to some agency in the beginning, but eventually what is left goes where!

They should pay because it will cause problems for future car owners, making them pay for the smoke problem causing pollution.

I am not certain what happens to that money, but wouldn't it be nice if people that own a Volkswagen actually get some of it @PatZAnthony . Love the photo! :)

Yeah, those entitled should. However, it seems way more money than was needed was required to be paid. Not defending VW, just wondering which agency ends up with extra money if their acct.

I've never owned one of those so I know I won't get any of it. Who was it blew the whistle on it in the first place? Was it some consumers or the government? If the latter, then I'd think the payment would be to them. What they would do with it I've no clue.

One the VW owners are compensated, it would see the excess money must go somewhere that has been approved, but where and why @Jillybean1222

I think the $ will be swept under some rug, but I wish some were returned to the owners, maybe they bought VW believing those emissions tests?

The lawyers and the court system and government will get a majority of that money. Of course, who knows how long VW has to actually get it paid off.....

If it is a class action law suit a form will be send in the mail to all VW car owners.

The lawyers will take a huge chunk. I assume the rest will be divvied among the plaintiffs.

The attorneys and court costs are always taken first from what we understand. Hope everyone entitled to something is compensated @JohnRoberts
