I'm Off to a Genealogy Conference

I will be at a genealogy conference, the NERGC for the next 5 days. Tomorrow is DNA Day and we will be learning how to use the results from our autosomal tests. I am looking forward to this. I am hoping to learn a few new things over the next few days. While I consider myself a bit of an expert, there are always new things to learn. I am not sure how much time I will have for my lot but when I have a minute or two, I will check in and try to read a few posts.

Is DNA testing still very expensive? I was wondering if the price has started to become more affordable now that it's becoming more popular.

It is $99 and often goes on sale for about $79. It is still very expensive if you want the whole works, Y DNA, Mito and autosomal. $300 and up.

@moffittjc That is interesting about being able to trace back that far since the records are sketchy at best, you must have aristocratic roots lol Sometimes family tree has the autosomal for $59, however, I prefer Ancestry since they have a bigger database.

@BelleStarr Wow, that is pretty expensive! My family has been lucky enough (or smart enough?) to keep extensive records of our ancestry. On my dad's side of the family, we have been able to trace our roots back to medieval Scotland, and on my mom's side of the family back to medieval Ireland. I know that doesn't give a complete answer to the makeup of my DNA, but at least we have solid records dating back to then. Someday I would like to find out what all I'm made up of, so maybe I'll give it a try in the future!

What is an autosomal test?

I think family tree explains it best. Autosomal DNA tests utilize DNA from the 22 pairs of autosomal chromosomes. Autosomal DNA is inherited from both parents. Therefore, an autosomal DNA test may be taken by either a male or a female.

I could probably help you if you are interested, at least with some good suggestions on what might work. Depends a lot on where and the nationalities when it comes to getting back to Europe. War plays havoc on records.

That sounds like a wonderful time ahead of you. Enjoy all of the conferences. I taught a summer school class in high school several years ago about forensics. The students and I had a really great time. They learned about fingerprints, tongue prints, footprints, palm prints, and how to read blood types.

While forensics is quite different from the type of DNA I will be working with it is a fascinating field.
