Parking Shock

Parking tickets

On my way home I passed through the car park, behind the shops on the High Street, and saw that about half the cards had been given a parking ticket for overstaying. Most of the ticketed cars had a single ticket, with several two tickets and a couple had three tickets. It appears that a secure parking service, at Heathrow Airport, had run out of space and they moved the overflow cars to this car park. Official reports are saying that 275 vehicles were ticketed in this one car park. A big investigation is now underway. Not the first time this has happened, but the first time for our little car park. Needless, to say the owners are less than impressed to find out despite paying out for safe parking there vehicles not only didn't they get that, but have been ticketed as well. Welcome home!

If they moved the cars, the owners cannot be held responsible to pay the tickets. This is insane.

@Ronrybs I am not at all sure about the legality of the situation either. It would be interesting to know more.

I'm not at all sure on the legality of the situation. If the driver can be identified then they are liable, but I'm not sure who has to pay out on this one

@LadyDuck We'll be waiting to see what turn the saga takes next, if it makes the news

@Ronrybs - Our bus system doesn't even go to the airport, believe it or not.

@teamfreak16 Having used buses in the US, I do believe it. Mind you, over here I've lived where there were only two bueses a day and that was market days only, so five days a week bus free! No wonder I love bikes

Not the best news to get. I always take the bus if I go to the airport, but then I don't have a car!

The parking service will surely be liable for the fines, not the car owners!

I would guess so, but I think the driver has to pay. If they aren't identified I am not sure what happens

This would be a nasty surprise. Would they enforce the fines do you think?

Not sure of the legal position. Normally the driver has liability, but have no clue what happens if they are not identified

@Ronrybs It can be pretty difficult to get out of parking fees.

That's awful! I hope, after the investigation, it will turn out that they don't have to pay! Are the fees very high?

@Ronrybs Yes, that's a maybe. If all those people will have to pay, there might be quite the uprising.

@CRK109 I suspect bad press and TV coverage may force the company's hand

I'm don't know the law, but I suspect it will come down to who drove them there or company will have to pick up the bill... maybe!

It is done by contractors and I think they may get comission on the number of tickets knocked out!

Sounds like someone making quick money, despite not being able to fill the contract. The modern ethical business age!

These parking services are a real minefield, you never know what's happening to your car while you're away! Still it should be fairly easy for the owners to prove that they couldn't have parked their cars there if they were out of the country!

@Ronrybs absolutely. Of course any bunch of cowboys could set up in business as a parking service; you don't need an office or industrial premises or any equipment or certification of any sort apart from (hopefully) a driving licence and a tel no. Then people just call when they arrive and you just take the caraway and leave it somewhere until they call to say they are back!

Not the first time this kind of thing has happened. If I had a car I'd be wary of leaving it with one of these companies

I only wish they gave tickets to the ones that park right on the narrow street along side the public park, where if I drive down that street, I have to watch out for doors opening on the street side. They should really not park along that street. It is like driving down an alley way.

While I don't drive anymore, that is something I hate. There are narrow streets here with cars parked on both sides, so that despite being two way traffic roads they are effectivally one way systems. I don't like cycling down them at all, as you say doors suddenly opening is a problem

Sounds suspicious to me. Didn't the owners pay for a space for a certain of time and then the cars are moved to a spot where suddenly they are in violation.

The owners are less than happy. They paid for secured parking at the airport and it turns out they were left unprotected out in public. Not the first time this has happened and you read of the little scandals as cars got stolen or damaged when they were supposed to be behind fences and CCTV.
