Good morning - kettle's boiling

Recently I wrote about our failing hearing and how I need to start documenting the funny things we think each other said. The particular example I used was telling Vince that an acoustic group was about to play and he thought I'd said a 'two-stick group'. However this time it was me who heard wrongly. Vince was in the bus at the Music Festival we were attending and cooking bacon and eggs for breakfast. I was outside wiping down the table before the seven of our group gathered for our meal. I thought I heard him say 'good morning'. I paid no heed as I thought he was calling out to one of the various campers who went past the bus back and forth on their way to the music venues. It was a friendly crowd and we talked to many strangers over the four days. So I paid no attention until he came to the door of the bus and said 'kettle's boiling'. This is why I am so patient with Vince's gradual loss of hearing. I can't afford to get upset when I'm nearly as bad. The photo shows the view from the bus back towards the Festival tents.

This is happening to me too, and I'm rather annoyed that my husband's hearing seems to be perfect. That's not fair as he's 9 years older than me!

That isn't fair at all! I thought it was just Vince for a few months but then I had this terrible realisation that I was nearly as bad.

@jaboUK - Ms Janet - Is that what people mean when they say that you have rocks in your head? I hear that aimed at me a whole lot. -Gus-

My Mum lost her hearing at the end too. It seems quite common as you get older.

It is amazing how advanced hearing aids have become...and how helpful they are in preventing misunderstanding.

@JudyEv I put off getting them too long thinking it would be an awful experience, but I loved my hearing aids from the minute I put them in. They make them so little now, hardly know they are there.

@drannhh It's good to hear that (no pun intended). The audio industry here is being investigated because of inflated prices so that has been putting us off too.

@JudyEv Yeah me too sometimes even now I don't hear things properly its because of a treatment I had to my ear when there was a big pimple that had bursted in my ear.

@JudyEv I do not think those two phrases are similar.I think it is better to finalize your reviews and decide on a hearing aid.I have come across many young people with them.

I haven't seen too many young people with them. Did you find it a bit strange to see this? Is it because of listening to loud music?

My step-father only turns his hearing aid on when he feels like it. I think it also helps to keep the peace sometimes.

Many of our friends do this too. Most go through a period when they first get them when they won't wear them. Later they seem to get more resigned to having to have them.

"Kettle's boiling" is so Aussie. Tea, was it? I thought it was "breakie."

@JohnRoberts I know there is a YouTube clip about all our abbreviations but some of them I haven't heard of and others I don't use. I think they went overboard a bit with the video. Certainly we do abbreviate a lot of things.

We had no power so we made coffee with hot water and a dash of milk. Which is how I always have it anyway. Vince usually has half and half and microwaved. The friend staying in the bus with us had black tea. Do you mean 'brekkie' as in 'breakfast'?

@JudyEv Yes, Brekkie. You guys have this abbreviated language: bikkie for biscuit, pressie for present, choccie for chocolate, rego for registration etc.

I'm surprised that the two 'versions' are so far apart. I always thought something like 'crush' would be heard as 'rush' or something close. But 'good morning' is a fair distance from 'kettle's boiling'. Of course, part of the problem was that I was expecting the kettle to be hot about then too so I put 2 and 2 together and only got 3.

@JudyEv - I've been misreading stuff lately. I recently read "vacation" as "Vatican." That made no sense whatsoever.

My hearing is getting pretty bad too and it's probably revenge from my grandmother as we used to laugh when she would make mistakes when her hearing diminished

Some of the misunderstandings can be very funny but it's no fun losing your hearing.
