There was a game of Pointless to watch next. A few years ago at a previous convention I took part in this event as a contestant, assisted by my friend, Eira. We came second out of four teams. This year we watched other contestants play the game based on a popular BBC TV how but with all the question given a science fiction angle. It was hosted by compere, David Allan. This was followed by the official opening ceremony for the convention, after about four hours of programming. The hard working committee and the guests of honour were introduced to us to much deserved applause. The brief introduction was immediately followed by what proved to be a very educational and explosive (literally) entertainment. Dr Emma J King, of the Royal Institution has been presented exciting science classes to children showing how everyday objects can be used in carefully controlled explosion. It proved to be just as thrilling for grown ups to see jelly babies, gherkins, and sugar flare up spectacularly and often loudly in experiments definitely not to be tried at home. A great start to the convention with many more delights to follow. The photo is of the hotel venue’s statue made entirely from Easter eggs Arthur Chappell

@teamfreak16 sugar is highly flammable but it needs a spark to ignite it but if it goes off you don't want to be near it. This is a re-construction of a big fire / explosion at a real US sugar refinery in 2007
Four-minute video depicting the specific events that lead to the explosion of the Imperial Sugar refinery in Port Wentworth.

Lovely display statue. Is it a week-long convention?

@Kandae11 a four day convention. I took two extra days before it to explore the city of Birmingham and travelled home the morning after the con, so I made a full week of it all
