I Now Have a New Web Addiction

Thanks, Ann (@drannhh). Until today I did not know about vocabulary.com. Now I can't stay away from it. It appears this is just what I need to keep my mind sharp and keep learning. I'm sure I've learned at least 25 new words today. I don't think I will ever catch up to the daily scores of others, though. I am very much behind. Those people must spend hours a day on the site to get those high scores in a day. If I'm going to be addicted to something, I'm glad it's at least helpful rather than harmful. What sites do you spend enough time on (besides this one) to consider them addictive? Why do you like them so much? Who else uses Vocabulary.com? What do you think of it? I love the way it teaches me new words in a number of contexts. What do you love or hate about it?

I have a lot of reference books, but I like the way this site introduces words I've never heard of and teaches me to use them. Then it reviews often enough to keep those words alive in my mind.

@bagarad I think it is nice to increase and review vocabularies. I can do this while teaching English online.

I have never heard of it. Sounds interesting though. Besides here, I am always working on my eBay site or other selling sites and doing research of what I might want to consider selling next.

I should be trying to sell on eBay. It's been years, and I have no recent ratings. I hope people will take a chance on me until I can get them again. First I have to clear a workspace on the table.

You are welcome @bagarad and Happy Birthday, almost. The site I am most addicted to is Royalgames. I go nuts over there. I like competing with people from all over the world and some of the games are very entertaining.

@bagarad Reading engages all of my faculties, so it is like exercise, but I find some games relaxing so I like a few before going to bed. I like to read in the morning.

@drannhh The only games I've played weren't computer games. I played JOTTO with my mom because she loved it. I played Boggle with my nephew when I was homeschooling him. Our family liked to play UNO and SKIPBO. so I played with them and enjoyed it because of the family interaction.

For some reason, I've never wanted to play games. I'd rather read for entertainment. It is my birthday now, but I didn't tell Facebook. I don't want people who never interact with me to feel they have to stop by on my birthday. Thank you for your wishes. There's only one person I know besides real estate and insurance agents who sometimes remembers. I'm feeling like I might be a year older.

@allknowing At the end of my second day, I have 32,435 points. I've missed lots of new words during assessments. I'm sure I've learned at least 30 new words in these two days.

I still have real-life friends and family on Facebook and very little drama. I just don't have enough time to spend a lot of it there.

@Courtlynn Maybe your friends are younger than mine. I think us oldies don't have as much energy for all the drama as the young do. We spend it all trying to stay alive and functioning.

@bagarad Yes,Chinese is a difficult language to learn with different Chinese characters having the same sound. However I find out the same with English in this respect.

@changjiangzhibin89 I don't mean the characters. It seems that the same sound can stand for different words depending on the tone or pitch you say them in. It's almost like singing. The same sound sung on a different note may mean something else. Or at least that's what I've been told.

I admire anyone Chinese who learns English. I don't think I could learn Chinese because it's so dependent on recognizing sounds. I have a bad ear for non-English sounds. I can't hear all the sounds in Slavic languages. I have a lot of Chinese friends, but they all learned English before or after coming to America. Many were born here.

I don't use the site. But now that I know about it I can. Do you also Easy Bib. Remember when you had to turn in research papers. Did you hate doing the bibliography? I did! This tool does it for you.
Automatic works cited and bibliography formatting for MLA, APA and Chicago/Turabian citation styles. Now supports 7th edition of MLA.

I did hate making all those footnotes on a typewriter. They didn't have personal computers when I was in school. I don't expect to do any more academic writing now. Would definitely check this out if I did have any.

Have you ever tried the website Free Rice?
For every correct answer you choose, 10 grains of rice are raised to help end world hunger through the World Food Programme.

Web addictios are not a good thing! Years ago I got addicted to Word Racer, an online competitive word game somewhat like Boggle if I remember correctly. I would play for hours until my hands, wrists and arms were in such agony I had to stop.

If it affects your health it wouldn't be good. I'm just trying to keep my brain going.
