Scan & Go photo at Walmart by Pat Z Anthony

The Scan & Go idea is great to some, while to others it strikes a nerve. As humans are replaced in what businesses claim is an effort to save consumers money, some of those humans will not be able to find jobs. My photo shared here was taken at a Walmart we visited which replaced eight registers with the new equipment we are all familiar with that allows you to check out on your own, or Scan & Go. We avoid stores offering this option as much as possible. We also refuse to use the Scan & Go aisles. Some think our refusal to visit certain stores or to use the Scan & Go aisles won't make a difference, but for us, we think it could. What do you think? Do you have Scan & Go aisles in stores near you?

They are not entirely reliable to begin with. I mean what if that machine isn't working or the person won't have his groceries scan.

That happens @Letranknight2015 Then an employee has to be called to fix what is not right.

We do have stores that have self checkouts. They still must have an attendant, but it is usually something like one per four registers. I hate them. The few times I have tried to use them they have malfunctioned. If they talk to me with an audible voice I talk back and feel crazy for doing so. I do not see that they save any time for those people who believe they do, but the overwork the attendant who must manage four lanes instead of one.

So many don't see what it is doing to the person managing more lanes than one @GardenGerty

I don't know that they are there so much to save time as for people to be able to watch more closely that they are being charge the price they expected to pay. Don't worry, I talk back to the machine all the time, but I work in a store that has them. We have to manage six lanes at once which is okay except certain times of the day when it's exceptionally busy and people get mad when they have to wait a few minutes until it's there turn.

There are one or two in the Supermarkets but they do give you a choice at the moment. I avoid those kind of things also all I can. I suppose that I will have to learn how to use them but I don´t like them either.

@PatZAnthony Wonder where all this will end? I mean if the Barcodes don´t work or want to register who the heck do you talk to a machine?

@lovinangelsinstead21 Here there is an employee to handle that, but still, what happened to the other eight employees who would have been at the registers that have been removed. On the unemployment line we guess.

We do, and I avoid them if can. I've tried them on occasion when there have been long queues at the regular check-outs, but have always had to call an employee when something goes wrong.

We have not (yet) this Scan & Go aisles here in Switzerland, but the Italian supermarkets are replacing all the regular cashiers with the new machines. We have no choice there, but use the new machines.

We do have them here and I refuse to use them. Not only is it taking away jobs from others but why should I do all the work and not even get a discount for doing it? I see they even have them at McDonald's now when you are placing your orders.

@PatZAnthony I will refuse to use them as much as I can and maybe others will do the same. The bar codes do not always sound when you pass them over the machine so what happens when you can´t get past that Bar Code and there is no one to help you.

I love the scan and go checkouts, as I can get my shopping done ten times faster than waiting in line for a cashier to ring me up. Nothing frustrates me more than having a cashier that scans my items slower than a turtle crossing a field of molasses in winter time. I'll give you an example of why I like the self checkouts so much. I visited Office Depot yesterday to buy some printer ink. I always have horrible checkout service at the Office Depot store, so I decided to time my entire shopping experience so I could show the manager how ridiculously slow they are. It took me 11 seconds to walk in the door, find the printer ink I needed, and walk to the checkout line. It then took me 17 minutes to checkout. To me, that is just unacceptable.

We have self scanners at our location one at each end. We used to have four registers for bigger orders too, but replaced those with people manned registers this past October. We found a lot of people were stealing on the larger ones. We live in a town with a lot of international people and many from here travel and live elsewhere for five or more years at a time. When they return they've been used to doing more on their own and want the self scanners. If we took them all out, we'd lose those customers too. Our store is one of the top five busiest ones in the mid-west, probably because of the influx of people living here, but we also get a lot of people traveling between Detroit, or even further south and the lakes up north and they'll stop here for groceries before hand. If we got rid of all those, people would be upset since if the order is simple those are a bit quicker many times. We also have more cashiers working the busy shifts than any other stores. We have 26 regular lanes that are manned all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9am until 7pm. We'd never replace more lanes with the self-checkouts, I know that much.

@PatZAnthony They don't cause job losses here, but I can see if stores put mostly those in and quite a few less manned lanes it would be different. Here, every grocery store has a few unmanned lanes other than places like Kmart and target, but I'd not buy my groceries there as the selection isn't the same.

I noticed it in the grocery store and figured it just was faster, not standing in line but I don't think I would use a store like Walmart if they had that in it. It isn't for speed, it is for money.
