Phil Wiggins Plays the Blues

One of the US performers at the recent Fairbridge Music Festival was Phil Wiggins, one of America's foremost blues harmonica virtuosos. Wiggins was born in Washington D.C. in 1954 and for three decades played with John Cephas. When Cephas died in 2009, he went on to play with a number of other artists including Australian blues guitarist/vocalist, Dom Turner. Wiggans told his story of growing up and having the whole neighbourhood out barbecuing in their backyards, passing potato salads and ribs over the fences to neighbours and so on. He said in any community like this where will be someone, perhaps an old auntie, who goes around stirring up trouble until there will be an almighty free-for-all. When things quietened down, someone would invariably say 'no fools, no fun'. He played a song with this name. He also said that if you couldn't identify the trouble-maker in your family or community, maybe it was you which I thought was pretty funny. We were blown away by the performance of Phil Wiggins and Dom Turner. With so many acts to choose from, it is easy to miss some good ones. I'm glad we didn't miss this. Here's a link to one of their pieces although I found this on YouTube.

Haha yes it was very much like that here too. Big family events, neighbours joining in with parties and a wicked witch of an old aunt I remember it well. There was a much bigger family feel to communities when I was young. Sadly not so now as families move many miles away!

You don't often get a community 'feel' in places now. And it is a great shame.

@garymarsh6 I'm sure there are hundreds who don't know their neighbours.

What he said about the trouble-maker made me love, I am glad I have identified the one in our family and also in our small community... at least I can imagine I am not the trouble-maker.

@JudyEv You are lucky, in our family it seems that the trouble-makers never die.

I don't really think we have a trouble maker in our family now. Most of the trouble-makers are deceased now.

@LadyDuck There have never been any major dramas in our families. I'm not sure why this is. Some families seem to lurch from one crisis to another.

@jobelbojel They were playing in quite a small room. If a popular group was due to play, everyone would rush to the venue well ahead of when they were due to start. You'd try to get a seat then wait patiently till it was time for your group to play. Sometimes people would stand around the walls if they couldn't get a seat.

It's amazing what they can do with these instruments, isn't it? He was very entertaining with his stories too. Some talk too much but Phil was good.

@teamfreak16 It is. It is really hard to describe something like music but if you can put up a clip it's different altogether. I really enjoyed a ride through part of London on the handlebars of @Ronryb's bike. A description wouldn't have been the same.

There are so many musicians in the world. I'll mention bands and no-one will have heard of them so clips are great in that respect. I didn't appreciate how good he was. We'd only read the 'blurbs' in the programme and they are designed to make all the groups sound fantastic - which is fine but that's how it is.

That's a good one pointing a finger at the one who cannot find the trouble maker. (lol) Good piece I listened to.

Our community has an annual party on the town green. Our homes are too far apart. Glad you enjoyed the performance.

I think it is great for communities to get together for 'parties'. Great idea.

I found it interesting. In every brass band we belonged to, there was always a trouble-maker.

I've never heard of Phil Wiggins, but he sounds like a good musician. Most of the time the little known artists are the ones who are more talented than the popular ones.

There are so many bands, groups and individuals out there now. Unless you're moving in a particular circle it's not surprising if you don't know about different ones.
