Are you someone who does not like it when silence surrounds you? Are you someone who wants or needs a bit of background noise to think? When I was younger I used to have TV or the radio on all the time, I needed that background noise to help me focus on what I was doing. I even studied with background noise. To me the sound of silence was deafening. I found myself listening for little noises. If I was listening for noises I could concentrate on the task at hand. I have heard that people who run away from the sound of silence, which is really no sound at all, are not afraid of silence but uncomfortable with themselves. What do you think? I have found that now that I am older I enjoy silence every now and then. I seem to be able to gather my thoughts easier. Beside, I have also have never found that silence is absolutely void of sound. I heard the creak of an old house, the chirp of a bird, the drip of water and a varied collection of little sounds. Are you a lover of silence or a background noise type of person?

I am a lover of silence, I do not want background noise or music. Where we live the only noise I hear is the ticketing of my fingers on the keyboard.

@HazySue When I open the windows, I also hear the birds chirping and the noise of the water running in the brook.

It's a nice sound to hear, the sound of yourself creating.

When things get overwhelming, I love to go to a place where I can commune with nature and enjoy the silence. It is for that reason, I tried to go on a vacation in a far away place once a year.

It depends on the mood. Most of the time it's very quiet here, except as you say the outside and inside noises. My apartment burbles and creaks. Outside is the traffic noise, highlighted by emergency vehicles. Once in a while I'll turn on the radio, but not often.

There is almost always some type of residual sound going on. It's when you are enjoying the silence that you then notice the sound of a gentle breeze, the creak of an old house.

Vince seems to need to have background noise although not as much as when we were first married. Continual noise, background or otherwise, drives me to distraction. I find it really stressful after a while.

@HazySue I must have made a fuss early in our married life and mostly it's quiet here. I'm more tolerant of it now and encourage him to put music on from time to time.

I feel stressed when there is always some type of noise going on such as a TV or music. My husband is also the type of person who needs the background noise. When he is not home I keep the TV and music turned off.

Some people can not function with silence and some have problems with background noise. To be most times background noise is distracting.

I enjoy silence. For some reason I can't focus or sleep with noise around me. Great topic. It's nice to to see a beautifully written and well thought out post!

Thank you. I love the sound of silence. I have found that there are so many things that we miss when we have a constant stream of background noise.

I enjoy silence at times but because I live alone I like the background noise from the street below at night.

So you like a little of both. I don't mind the background noise sometimes such as when I'm cleaning or cooking.

If I am alone I prefer to have some manner of background sound whether it is television , radio or music.

A lot of people need that background noise when they are alone. It is why silence can be used so effectively in a suspense story, That little creak, the whisper of a sound, they can be quite spooky when there is no background noise.
