Loretta Lynn Suffers a Stroke

Regardless of how one feels about country music, you at least know the name "Loretta Lynn." The film account of her autobiography, Coal Miner's Daughter, was an Oscar-winner. Lynn herself has been performing for over 55 years, rising to stardom from the poverty of the coal mining region of eastern Kentucky (which was chronicled in her most famous hit). Today her website announced that she suffered a stroke at her home in Hurricane Mills last night (Thursday May 4). She was taken to a Nashville-area hospital, where she's undergoing treatment. Her web site says the country legend is "expected to make a full recovery." Loretta Lynn turned 85 three weeks ago today, on April 14. She's one of the few remaining certifiable, undeniable legends in music of any genre. Loretta Lynn's home was the subject of an episode of the Travel Channel show Ghost Adventures. Here's the song featured in that episode, which was actually written about Patsy Cline's widower:

That's a shame but hopefully she will make a full recovery.

I saw her at Renfro Valley in 2015. Still sounds amazing, even if she did sit for most of the show.

No updates from her web site, publicist, or "news sources" (that I trust, anyway) from Nashville. I would imagine she'll have to take some time to recover. Hopefully it's not a career-ending stroke. There are a lot of country performers (Grandpa Jones, Wilma Lee Cooper, Minnie Pearl, Bob Wills) who had their careers abruptly ended by strokes. Some lived for a long time after the stroke (Poco's George Grantham, whose stroke [onstage] ended his career in 2004), just never able to perform again.

Her web site says she's expected to recover, and her concerts have been "postponed," not "cancelled." (A friend of mine in Durham was supposed to go see her tonight.) Still, a stroke at 85 cannot be good, no matter how "minor" it is.

I hope she pulls through but it may signal the end of her career. I don't know if she still did much performing.

Good grief yes! I think she still does about 100 shows a year.
