It's Been A Trying Week

I haven't been here for most of last week. It was a horrible week that thankfully turned out well. My husband was out running errands at the beginning of last week when our car stopped running. Oh no now what. We had it towed into our car guy's place and had them look it over to find out what had happened. The result was very very bad. We had blown the transmission. Not a good thing at all. Our car was old a 2005 and we hadn't paid a lot for it so it wasn't worth fixing. We had to get another car. We do have our van but it's old as well and we only really use it to go camping and fishing. We would rather not use it for everyday stuff. So off we went to find another car. We weren't desperate to buy the first one we saw but we didn't want to take weeks and weeks to get one either. Despite the rain and cold we had to go car shopping. We had our minds set on either a Toyota or a Honda. My nephew is a mechanic and has always told us Honda's and Toyota's are a couple of the best cars on the road. They can last for a long long time. Being on a fixed income we figured that would be our best bet for a long life on this car. But as you can see from the picture on this post that's not what we ended up with. There was no way we could afford a new Honda or Toyota so we looked at used ones. They were still so expensive unless we wanted a 10 year old car or older. We didn't. We were finding them for 12 and 13 thousand for cars that were around 5 to 7 years old. We both felt like that was to much for a car of that age. On Saturday we found the one pictured in this post. It's a 2015 Ford Fiesta with 18,000 miles on it. It looks brand new. And we got it for 10 thousand, much more in line with our budget. There is still a one year warranty on it and it has some bells and whistles that we haven't figured out yet, but all in all we are pretty happy with this car. My hubby's pension can't really support a 5 year car payment, so this morning I'm calling my stock guy to send me the money from my inheritance account to pay for this car in full. After a long week of shopping for cars and fending off the salesmen we are satisfied and so glad to be done with the whole thing. It wasn't the car we were looking to get but we are both happy with the car and certainly the price.

We had a Ford Fiesta that we bought in 1999 and we sold last year, we never had a problem with that car. I was sad and sick when we had to sell it, but the anti pollution laws here, made the car too expensive to maintain.

Sorry your week was so rough fishtiger. Now that is a nice little green car, I love it!! You got a good deal then, and now that it will be paid in full, that is a great relief.

Glad you found one in your budget...that's important. We usually trade in our suv's at least every three years so that we get a good trade in for them and then we don't have to shell out over 40K for one. We are due and are waiting until the 2018's come out. This one will probably be the last big suv....i think ...maybe. We are GM and have had all Chevy since I married him and never a problem with any of them. We might upscale a little this time.

We have our van for the camping and fishing, so wanted a smaller car for around town. It is important to be able to afford the car. I called my stock guy and will get the money on Thursday so I will be happy when this thing is paid for. We got full coverage on it and because of our age it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. So all in all it was a good buy.

@fishtiger58 My cousin, single, pays quite a bit more for car insurance than we do - but she lives in a bit city (Baltimore) and we live in the boonies, but our isn't cheap due to the fact we have more chance of getting hit by a John Deere tractor than we do a car.

@AbbyGreenhill I was surprised by how little we are paying for full coverage on this thing, but very happy as it comes out to 57 bucks a month. Not to shabby. Of course we have 4 cars and our house on this particular insurance so the more you insure the less it all is.

A new transmission is awful. Glad you found a car that new and with only 18,000 miles. I wish you many more years of happiness with it. Welcome back!

Thanks Dianne, my hubby didn't want to be pressured into getting it, and the sales lady wasn't pushy, We left to look at others and I talked up that car all the way. Two hours later we were back to buy it. Now he's glad we did, it was a great deal. New Fiestas cost twice what we payed for a two year old car. And yea the milage on it is fantastic, it still smells like a new car..

@DianneN Oh a new baby smell is the best. My youngest son had a great smell when he was a baby, even his breath was fantastic. They could have blindfolded me and lined up 100 babies and I would have known my son by his smell. Just lovely.

@fishtiger58 That is defintely a plus, it is really hard to find your car when all the cars look the same..when I go to look for my vehicle in a parking lot, half the cars look like it!

@fishtiger58 if and when my brother buys a new car, i hope it will still be a manual transmission. i am more at ease driving a manual-steering car rather than power transmission.

I am so sorry you have had such a rough time, car problems are the worse, my mom had a car break down and then she borrowed my grandmothers car then something when wrong with it, it felt like we just had the most horrible luck, and it took us forever to find a good car, she settled on a PT Cruiser so far it has ran great.
