Instead of rushing to the pharmacy to buy pills for a simple ailment- what are the natural home remedies you might have used that actually work better? It could be something your mother or grandmother once used with confidence. Over the years, honey and lime has been the cough remedy that I have used for my son whenever he came down with a cough - the regular cough syrups never seemed to do the job. And long ago, when I used to catch colds (I no longer get them) - I would breathe in the vapors from a cup of steaming hot water with pieces of garlic added - this would ease congestion in the nose. Do you have any natural remedies to share?

I like homemade chicken soup, honey, tea with honey or lemon, and warm salt water gargles. I'm usually very ill when I don't feel well, so get an antibiotic. Thank goodness it is more rare now that I am not exposed to sick children at school.

All of the above mentioned do help a lot. And yes - it is easy to catch cold and flu viruses when you are exposed.

@Kandae11 we have herbal plant called oregano which is so effective to cough. My kids also know that when they're injured or wounded they will use the malunggay or moringa extract to stop bleeding and serves as antibacterial

@ilocosboy I know of moringa. When I lived in the city there was a moringa tree in the yard.

We use home remedies before we go to Doctor. However, now a days new bacterium and virus are evolving, therefore, home remedies fail sometime. We gargle with lukewarm salt water when we face coughing problem.

@Kandae11 You are welcome. One more tip - if you are suffering from cough - Grate some ginger and extract its juice by putting the grated ginger in a piece of cloth and then take few drops of honey and mix it with ginger juice in a spoon and take/swallow it, it will sooth your sour throat and give relief from cough. It is an old age tested formula.

Yes I do, the same as you use mostly Kandase. In wintertime when colds and coughs come, I drink hot tea w honey and real lemon not the bottled kind. And with that I swallow real garlic chopped into pieces. An old remedy I had gotten from my Aunts sailor boyfriend was heated olive oil, sea salt, and honey on a spoon for coughs.

He he...I am a natural remedy person....I would add basil too that honey drink for cough. I grind up neem leaves so that my son can apply before a bath as he says skin is scratching. Tiny guava leaves chewed up are good for tummy upsets.

@Kandae11 Here apples are costly But guavas grow aplenty. So if the cost you mind Worry not, you'll find That the latter is just as healthy. The first two sentences rhymed so I turned it into one

The basil would be a good addition. I only recently realized the many health benefits which can be derived from guava leaves. My neighbor has a tree in her yard.

I do have one from my grandmother and it's a bit strange but it works. A bit of cinnamon with a tiny bit of water and mixed into a paste, eat the paste but don't chew it, with a small glass of milk. Just swallow the paste like a pill with the milk. Great for diarrhea. I have never in my life used meds for diarrhea nor have my sons who are now grown. It works great.

Curry or another spicy food works great if you have a cold or sore throat. Not just the fact it's something that you can actually taste. It actually helps relieve the symptoms as well

@Kandae11 It really does help. It clears your sinuses and breaks up the gunk in your nose and throat. It also tastes way better than cough medicine.

Nothing seems to work for me as far us pharmaceutical or natural remedies and so I have been working on prevention for a number of years. It has been over 10 years that I haven't needed a doctor. When I get something I try to figure out what might have caused it and and avoid the cause. I know that a good diet is very important, amongst other things.
