Some photos are just too personal

Very shortly I am going to the dentist to have a temporary crown removed (on my tooth) and a permanent one put on. It should be a short visit and may not even involve needles which would be nice. Fiacre's post (@xFiacre) about sitting in front of a huge mirror while having a haircut reminds me that the dentist is bound to show me huge X-rays of my teeth while he explains what he's done. I'm not particularly interested in seeing these images but I guess I'll sit and nod and smile. My sister recently had a little camera inserted which went all round her bladder showing no abnormalities. She was able to watch on a screen. When I took my friend to have laser treatment on her eyes I was able to watch the procedure in the waiting room. What's with all these professionals thinking we want to see these images? I know I don't. The photo is from my sister's garden.

I think I'd like to see it because I feel much more relaxed to know what my treatment will be. I know I don't understand what the doctor says, but at least he shows me about it with pictures and it is helpful. I don't mind seeing it.

@JudyEv If I can't see what the doctor is doing, perhaps it will make me feel much more nervous.

It must be a tiny little camera to be poking around inside you. It's good that you're okay with it.

My doctor once stuck his stethoscope to my ears so that I could hear my own heartbeats. I was not quite comfortable

@allknowing That's a bit different then. It seemed a bit of a strange thing for a doctor to do otherwise.

My husband also had endoscopy before. I was able to see what's wrong with his bile ducts. He too was able to see it while it's being done on him.

i may sound weird, but last year, at exactly same day today, I went under the knife for laparotomy and laparoscopy. The night before, I asked the anesthesiologist if he was going to put me to sleep because I wanted to see the procedure. He said it was impossible because I would be in general anesthesia.

@Iam_jauntyjen You didn't need to be ashamed. Apparently people say very strange things when they are coming out of anaesthetic. Be thankful you weren't swearing.

@JudyEv The funny thing was. When a nurse tried to wake me up at the recovery room, I got irritated because I was dreaming of buying Kimchi. I actually uttered " I am at the grocery store!" . Someone, replied "what are you doing there?" I replied " buying Kimchi" . I heard laughters. After few minutes, I realized, I just had surgery and I was at the recovery room. I was so ashamed.

Yes, those things look unfamiliar in camera. I don't like to see them either. For me a rose is always a good thing to see and appreciate.

My son had to have knee surgery when he was in 11th grade, he dislocated his knee and there was swelling for a month or so. The doctor just went in and cleaned it up and removed the blood that was causing the swelling. After the surgery he gave me pictures of what it looked like in his knee. Most of the pictures I couldn't figure out what I was seeing, but the doctor removed a small piece of chipped bone, and there was a picture of the bone next to a ruler to show it was a couple centimeters long... Yep, didn't need to see that!

That's what I think! I guess maybe it's fascinating to the doctors to have this technology. It must make a huge difference to the ease with which they can treat something.

I've had to tell physicians that medicine is not my field and if they think I can understand what they're talking about, they're mistaken. Some can simplify things, others can't.

@JudyEv Once I went to an orthopaedic specialist. I had problems with my back. He x-rayed me and then explained the x-ray photos to me. Or so he thought. He said, "This is the beginning of -- and then a long term followed, half Greek, half Latin." I replied "And what does that mean, please?" He started again, "This is the onset of..." I interrupted him and said, "Thank you. I'm familiar with the German word 'beginning'. What does the rest mean?" He was flabbergasted. He couldn't understand that I didn't know what he was talking about. Idiot.

Maybe they just want us to see whats going in our body that we can't see. Some people insist that they wanted to see for confirmation. I'm not sure how will that confirm if we are not professional enough to know and understand what is going on. But I guess its a kind of assurance.

@JudyEv If I could turn my mind off from the pain of it, it probably wouldn't bother me so much. But when I see a picture of a procedure being done automatically my mind goes toward the pain they must be feeling. =(

I am surprised you where allowed to watch the laser treatment that was not yours. This is not allowed here, it's a violation of your privacy. The dentists show me the X-rays because he wants to explain what is wrong and what is fine. For all the other treatments they ask you if you want to see or if you prefer to listen to some music.

My friend didn't mind me watching although I'm not sure now if she was specifically asked or not. And I can understand that it helps a person understand if they can see X-rays or whatever. For me, I'd just as rather not watch.
