Simple but effective

When I’m out and about walking or cycling I do like to look at other people’s gardens, admire the flowers and the interesting design ideas. Some people are obviously real plant lovers, some stick to a theme, some are very tidy and regimented, others have more of a semi-wild effect. While I was waiting for my daughter to come from her music lesson the other day this gateway caught my eye. It’s so simple, with just a pair of easy-to-grow plants (Kerria japonica) trained over an arch, but it really brightens up what would otherwise be a dull gate in a wall. It cheered me up while I was waiting, and it was interesting because although this shrubby plant is quite common in gardens around here, I’ve never seen it used this way before. This is beautiful, the house in front of hours has brightened their entry arch with yellow vine roses, they are beautiful.

It's nice that it brightens up the road for passers-by as well as for them!

I used to be but not now, My gardens are a mess and I hope my kids will help me clean them up. I LOVE the photo. My knees don't allow me to garden much...

Thanks! I love gardening but it's certainly something that doesn't allow you to leave it for long. I hope you get some help. I'm hoping to be one of those old ladies who still garden in their 90s... we'll see.

I think that flower is what I call Soldiers' Buttons. I do like to see what other people do with their gardens, yes.

I look at gardens all the time especially since I no longer have one. And put together all that I like in my virtual garden That's a very attractive gateway

The house owner has good taste in beautifying gateway.Common plants can make your house be a pleasure to behold, depending on where you place them.

That's a very beautiful gateway with the yellow flowers! I wish I had a garden, I would definitely get ideas from other people's flower techniques and I would also love to try my own ideas!

If I lived in more of a city setting where people could see things around our house from the road I would be inclined to do more like in your photo. but even hanging a wreath on our front door no one would see it, including us! That is a very pretty photo

Thank you! Yes you're right, beautifying the outside of your home is really only worth it if you have a lot of visitors or at least people passing by!

I think that is a lovely arch and it would most certainly inspire me to do something new in my own garden. Winter is here so we dont do much as all things slow down and kind of hibernate for the season

Very pretty! Yet I wonder how the people cut off the wilted blossoms. That must be exhausting.

I don't think it's really necessary, they mostly just drop the petals and disappear (we have the same shrub in our garden, but just as a straggly untrained specimen!)

As you say, the gateway would be pretty ordinary without the lovely arch. It's very effective.

There is a place just down the street from me flowers are very stunning. I love to look at it and wonder what kind of people live there each time I go by. It is so tidy.
