I nearly forgot, this is Bag Day!

At least, that's what I call it. Every year the post office sends a reminder to put a few cans of food in a bag and leave it by your mail box. The food is taken to local food banks to help families that can't afford to buy food and are struggling even for the basics of life. I did not think I would have anything this year so I nearly forgot about Bag Day. I remembered last night and went through my pantry. I was surprised at how much was there hiding behind boxes of crackers, trays of household tools, and all the other junk that makes its way there! There was even a cake mix that made me smile thinking of someone enjoying it. It made me feel a lot less poor taking that bag out to the mailbox last night! Do you have Bag Day where you are? If it's not too late and your post office participates please put out at least one can of food for your mail carrier to take.

Yes we have it here. But sadly, I have naught to put into it. Sometimes I have something I take to the food bank down the street from me, it is only a few blocks.

These are tough times and a lot of people feel bad today that they can't contribute. We have a huge semi truck come to the neighborhood every two weeks and people line up to get produce and other food from the food bank. You would not think that an area like this, a middle class neighborhood, would need this service but appearances are deceiving. I'm glad you contribute when you can. Every little bit helps!

We don't have anything like that here in the UK, it sounds like an exccellent idea.

Do you have a problem in the UK with poverty? I never hear about people going hungry in your country. We have plenty of hungry people here, it's ridiculous that even one person should go without food in a country as wealthy as ours. Our government has ruined so many lives and hunger is one consequence of our huge, sprawling, uncaring and greedy government.

@dragon54u There are homeless people, mainly in the cities, but I think there are shelters available and food. Whether there are enough, I'm not sure.

Unfortunately, I did forget. I might see if there is another food drive going on that I can participate in instead. I'm sure we could have found some stuff to give away. We are far from rich but sometimes I try to help if I can.

@dragon54u I think that does say a lot about people. The greedy stay greedy but those who struggle know what it's like to struggle and don't like to see others struggle. I may not be rich but I have everything that I need and that's more than some people. I actually got to help give back today after church we stayed and helped sort through food and I gave my time on mothers day and it made me feel good that even though I didn't donate this year I was able to give my time to help.

It's so easy to forget these things when you're busy with life and worried about so much, isn't it? I'm sure you'll seek out another opportunity. There are all kinds of food drives throughout the year. One thing I don't do is put money in those collection boxes at the cashier, who knows who gets that?! I know what you mean when you say you're far from rich. The average contributor to events like this tend to be people like you who are just getting by. That is a great testament to this country--it is run by greedy jerks but the people support each other more than any other country in the world.

I'm sorry your health is poor, mine isn't what it used to be, either. Old age is not for sissies!

I live in an apartment complex. The mail carrier set the mail bin on the floor by the mailboxes a week before bag day. I still forgot to go through my pantry. I remembered last year though. Hopefully I'll remember next year.

Isn't that weird? I can have something like that happen and think well, I'll do that. But it becomes part of the landscape and I forget! I'm sure you'll have several chances to add to the bins inside the grocery stores and other ways to give.

My mom always told me that no matter how bad things are, someone else is suffering more. I remember a sign I saw in a beauty salon when I was around 7. It said "I cried because I had no shoes until a met a man who had no feet". I'm always remembered that. It's strange the things we remember from childhood but in that case it was a good thing to remember.

Maybe they just do it in really big cities? It's an easy, painless way to give. If every household could donate just one can of food it would help. I wish people would do this every week at the grocery, just drop one can in a barrel and if every family would donate just one, we could make a huge dent in hunger.

We put a bag out with several canned goods in it and there were many around mailboxes in the area. I was glad to see that.

We don't have bag day here. Our local supermarkets have colection points inside the store for the foodbank and local pet shelter. I usually just grab an extra couple of tins or packets to donate while I'm getting our shopping.

@dragon54u It costs me around £2 to do this it's a shame more people don't do it. If stuff is on offer that £2 maybe buys 4 cans of food. It's just something I do automatically now when I do our shopping and most of my friends do the same.

That is kind of sad. Your country adopted all the holidays that enrich the large businesses but not the ones that help the poor. That is not surprising that our money making holidays should be there. I don't buy anything on those holidays, not because I dislike people making money, but because they are making money from love. I think that you probably help the poor when you can because you seem like a very nice person.

Most areas in the UK have some kind of Food collection. At the supermarkets you can place something in a donation box. Every September following harvest the churches and the schools have a harvest festival. You are encouraged to send something in so that it can be distributed to the old people in the community. It would be special things as well as basics that they may not usually buy themselves. I would rather give food than money as at least you know it is not being misused.

I agree, I would rather give food than money. I always try to include one thing, like the cake mix, that isn't essential but just fun to lighten a day. I like the idea of a harvest festival. I think the closest we come to that is Halloween but that's about candy, not really about supporting the less fortunate.

We have bins in our supermarkets frequently. They put them near the door so you see them when you come in and hopefully you'll buy an extra can to put in the bin when you leave.

This is the only charity I've been able to participate in this year, it's been such a bad time. Things are looking up, though, slowly but surely. Thank you for participating when you can, a lot of people don't but I think most would like to.
