Just a piece of bread and butter please

My sister and brother are twins and were born in 1938. My mother had no idea she was having twins until the first baby had been delivered and the doctor said ‘wait a minute, I think there's a second baby’. Things were a bit different in those days. Every year the local community would organise a Christmas tree. Every family would make the effort to attend with their children. There would be a tree, some organised games, food to eat and eventually Father Christmas would give out the presents. Many of these children rarely attended any social functions and my siblings were two that seldom ate anywhere but in the home. When they were five or six they attended one of these Christmas parties. Faced with an array of fancy cakes and all sorts of goodies, my sister sat quietly, a bit bamboozled by it all. When one of the mothers asked her what she’d like to eat, she replied ‘Just a piece of bread and butter please’. As I said earlier, things were a bit different back then. The photo is of my siblings.

This is a beautiful and precious picture. I was born in 1951, we had a lot less than the young kids, but I would say also a lot more. My Mom made cakes at home for the special occasions.

I don't think we missed out at all really by being born when we were. Many things were simpler and we still had much to be thankful for.

@shaggin I think Shirley Temple had a lot to do with it. It might even be how my sister got her name - she is Shirley.

What a nice story Judy! I love hearing about people's lives and stories of growing up. Are your siblings older or younger than you?

My hunch is that they're older. I don't think of Judy as old enough to be my mom.

I was born on their 8th birthday - so every time I have a birthday I have to buy two presents - hardly seems fair really.

I love butter especially if it's on a slice of bread fresh from the oven. Oh wow, have any of your sisters had twins? I did hear once that twins usually skipped a generation. I can't imagine what those times would have been like in Australia, I know here in the US they were trying to recover from a major depression.

I once read that the twin thingy is passed down from mothers to daughters and many times it'll skip a generation @JudyEv I am curious though if the twin gene can double if both parents are of families with twins.

@rebelann I guess there are statistics on it somewhere. I remember seeing a TV program once where all these sets of twins got together for a big picnic. It was a bit weird seeing doubles of everyone of all ages.

There haven't been any more twins in the family although Mum's brother's wife also had twins. Times were very hard in Australia too when the Great Depression hit.

I actually know someone who knew they were having twins, but #3 was the surprise! This was "back in the days" too, before all the technology they have now to find out about these things.

Nowadays with ultrasounds they know so much before the baby is even born. I was born on their 8th birthday so am 8 years younger.

Kids were so different then weren't they? And mostly so obedient. Parents were too busy to be continually fussing over them.

That's the same year my sister was born. My mother once made us cups of tea and then she presented bread with butter, topped with some sugar and cinnamon. I looked at it and asked, "What's this?" She told me to try it and it was SO good! Then she told me that growing up, her mother would make that for her and her brothers for dessert. It's all they could afford. I was truly amazed but I loved it! So simple, yet so good.

That does sound yummy. Vince and his siblings lived in town and would go home for lunch each day. Often they only had bread and milk as the family was quite poor. But they loved it and didn't think anything of it.

@JudyEv Sometimes I think poor people had it best. They had very little but they sure did appreciate it all. Not like today when everyone is grumbling about what they "don't" have!

I'm told that I also was a modest child. Sometimes my mother was embarrassed when I declined a treat. The times were harsh in post-war GDR (German Democratic Republic). I should have been grateful to be offered a sweet or an apple or whatever it was.

It's amazing what they can work out now well before a baby is born. My friend's grandchild hasn't been born yet but they know he only has one kidney.
