Employer of the Year. Not.

Hello, peeps. I've been feeling rather stressed lately. Not all bad, though. Some is good stress, waiting for information, and working on things. I'm determined that things are going to start going my way. We're awaiting some paperwork regarding moving house. We're doing well with collecting voting tokens towards a wedding competition. And I've just registered as a sole trader so that I can make my education business all legal and official. So, that stuff is all good. What is not good is my employer and my current employment situation. One good thing about my employer, though, is that she has spurred me on to put more effort into building my business. She's done that by being such a dreadful employer that I desperately need to be not working with her, and my alternatives are very limited. I will try not to go into too much of a rant here but, let me just say, I don't think it's a co-incidence that my employer's best friend, sister, and former employees all share the fact that they suffer from depression. That's not something I would usually say and I'm not saying it's her fault. I am, however, saying that working with her, I can absolutely believe that she would do no favours to anyone's mental health. I've been working with her a lot because she hasn't got anyone else. She can't keep anyone, and the reasons are obvious. Most recently, I worked three hours longer than expected on Friday. I worked one hour longer than expected yesterday but would, no doubt, have ended up working longer had I not pointed out that I was supposed to finish an hour previous. She then went on about how she couldn't give people set times (which, up to a point, is true due to the nature of the job) because she never knows what she's doing. Except, yesterday, she did know exactly what she was doing and at what times. She doesn't seem to understand that other people have lives outside of work and that she is, despite her opinion, not actually doing anyone a favour by expecting them to work longer hours. Apparently, I should be glad I work for her because it meant I had the money to get my car fixed. That would be the damage which wouldn't have needed fixing if it wasn't for her. She also knows I have another job, yet still asks me to get to her 5 minutes after I've finished the other job. It's 15 minutes away. Then when she's fishing for me to work at the weekend, and I remind her I can't do that, she'll tell me that I do have an hour that I could work. Erm, yes, because I want to spend my one free hour rushing about working for her on what should be a day off. She gets worse, I'm sure. These are just a few stories. She's also selfish, lazy, hypocritical, stupid, demanding, ignorant, greedy, racist, and a lot of other things but none of them good. I did have a moment when I thought that she may at least have a little compassion about something but I'm not convinced. I think that was more of an attention-seeking, feeling sorry for herself kind of thing. Today, she asked me about whether or not I'll be moving house (even though she asked yesterday and I didn't know then either). I said something about running out of options (well, only really having one option and not knowing what to do if that didn't work out). Of course, she had to be worse and tell me it's the same for her. No, it's not the same for her. I have ONE possibility. If that doesn't work out, I'm stuck. She has lots of possibilities. Her actual problem is that she doesn't have someone handing her exactly what she wants. Well, anyway, that's all for now. Just needed to get that off my chest. I have lasted with her for about 6 months (which is longer than most) and other people are surprised that I've managed that long. The problem for me, of course, is that there is little choice in the way of suitable jobs. I liked my previous job as a Sandwich Artist but couldn't do the hours when they changed them. So, I will put up with her as long as I can either until I have a few more students or until I can't take any more. What is the worst or best job you've had? Any worst or best employer stories?

Oh dear you are doing well to stick it out so long. I hope you manage to get away and forge your own path soon! My worst job ever was in a vegetable processing place, standing at a conveyor belt chopping the root ends off celery. I only had to spend two days there but it was the worst thing I ever did, I've never forgotten it although it was over 40 years ago now. We had to crawl out of bed at 4 or 5 am and get in the back of a van (surely not legal even then) for a long drive to this factory to spend the day doing the most boring, mind-numbing thing you can possibly imagine with horrible gang-masters. Every time the subject of migrant labourers comes up I remember the people who worked there, it's a terrible way to try to make a living.

That does sound rather dreadful. I once had a job at Asda which involved skewering chickens onto a rotisserie. Had to put my thumbs up inside the anal cavity in order to do this. The weird thing is, that bothered me less than having to touch their necks (which I could never do)! My partner has told me about some of the jobs he's done. He's had a few exciting and interesting ones like blasting at a quarry (basically, he got paid lots of money to blow stuff up) but he didn't like it too much at the Skittles factory. If I recall correctly, his job there was to press a reset button if the machine needed to be reset. It might happen once a day or so. He got a lot of reading and studying done while doing that job! I have tried a few things before but never seemed to be able to make it with anything, lucky if I had so much as one person interested. I'm determined to make more of this one. I've also got much better support than I've had before so that's good, and I'm better focused (or, at least, I have my other half to keep me focused).

@Fleura I'm going to provide one to one, home-based tuition for children and adults. Mainly in English and maths, and I am hoping to offer some craft and board game workshops. I've been working with one person for about 10 months now. She's my guinea pig! I incorporate games like Scrabble into her lessons. I think I'm doing well with her. Before I worked with her, she was struggling with work designed for 7-year-olds. Now, she's well on her way to the right level for her age (11) in English and only about 1 year behind in maths. Hopefully, I'll get a few more clients and have similar success. :)

Worst job ever was working on a credit control department. We had customers making complaints everyday and some abusing you. This was very stressful and made me hate that job

I can imagine that wouldn't be good. I've worked with people who have thought their customers unpleasant while I didn't have any problems. I've had good service from places I was told had poor service, although I have also experienced poor service from those who always give poor service! Either side of it, people wonder why they're treated badly. Sometimes, it doesn't matter how pleasant you are, you might still get lots of abusive customers. My employer isn't what I'd call directly abusive but she is certainly rude and then wonders why she doesn't get the response she wants!

@pumpkinjam My ex boss was similar to your boss. She never understood us and was yelling at us infront of everyone

I'm concentrating on the business now. There's no way of working it out with the current boss. I need to get away from her as soon as possible! I have given up looking for other jobs because, as you say, it could be better or worse. I don't want to keep jumping from job to job, finding it doesn't work out as expected.
