Turtle in the Grass

One of the most important things I've learned ever since I took up nature photography as a hobby is to take my time and pay attention to what is around me. This paid off a couple days ago when I came across this turtle. It was a smaller turtle (not quite a baby but not much bigger than my hand) and, at first glance, looked like a rock. In addition, I found it in a place I wouldn't normally expect to see a turtle, out in the open in a grassy field with no water within easy reach. I have no idea why it was there but decided to leave it because I'm sure it had its reasons.

I don't know if he was really creeping. He pretty much just stayed still the whole time I was there. I'm almost wondering if a heron or some other bird grabbed him and dropped him there.

@srhelmer That is possible Steve. Because he was so still maybe he was hiding.

It's a snapping turtle. They live in water. The only land turtle we have in this state (ornate box turtle) is very rare and not seen around here.
