Not Your Mama's Yarn

Alpaca hair

I was thinking I have a "gag gift" with what I have in my picture. I am the proud owner of three balls of alpaca hair; don't worry they were washed before being rolled. Why? Well, it doesn't matter. It's definitely the weirdest thing in my apartment. What about you? Do you like parties that just do gag gifts? I like that they are no high expectations.

Have you heard what you can use those yarn balls for? I know because I've made some myself. You can use them in the dryer instead of dryer sheets to keep the static out of your clothes. I made a bunch of them and I toss them in with the wet clothes and they work very well!

@AmbiePam @CRK109 I thought it was a ball of proper yarn but judging by your comments here perhaps I'm mistaken.

I know a crazy knitter or two who might like to spin this stuff and make something. It is high dollar hair. I have not been to a gag gift OR dirty Santa party (where you steal) in a long time.

Makes me miss the Christmas parties we would have when I worked at Headstart.....everyone brought a "white elephant" gift and you never knew what crazy thing you would end up with.

You've seen an alpaca, correct? Some might mistake them for looking similar to llamas.

Alpaca hair wow!!! That is so cool Ambie! Where on earth did you get them? Yes they may smell if they are not washed no? I think yes, that may be the best gag gift I ever saw.

@TiarasOceanView They are supposed to get out wrinkles in the dryer, like fabric softeners, only cheaper.

A "gag gift" party? I never heard of such a thing. They must be a barrel of laughs.

If I knew how to knit or crochet I would use it for that. I actually looked into taking lessons for free from a local craft store. I missed out on the deadline by two days.

Did you buy them to use in the dryer? I preferred to buy synthetic balls, but also a ball made with aluminium foil works.

@Lupita234 Yes, a simply aluminium foil wrapped like a ball works.

I see from the comments that you use that alpaca hair in the washer/dryer. I was stumped there for a second

Gag gifts sound good but I wouldn't really rate alpaca yarn amongst them. This would make a wonderfully warm beanie or scarf if you had it knitted or crocheted up.

I'd love to know how to do that. I hope I can take lessons some day.

Alpaca hair...now that is interesting! I don't do gag gifts too often but they can be funny.
