What I Love About Where I Live

I have enjoyed every place where I have ever lived, for various reasons. I grew up in Missouri and lived for 25 years in Texas. I have lived in California for about 25 years. Missouri is a beautiful state, with rolling hills and many hardwood forests. I lived there from birth until I graduated from college when I was 21. Texas is a hot state, but it has friendly people, fabulous barbecue and a wide variety of fun activities ... from swimming in the warm Gulf of Mexico to the night life in any of the major cities. Of all the places I have lived, however, I am best suited to Southern California. I love the warm, tropical feel of the area, especially along the Pacific Coast. I appreciate the relaxed, friendly people. There are more things to do in Southern California than I could possibly accomplish in my lifetime ... Disneyland, Sea World, Universal Studios, live theater, snow skiing in the local mountains, boating in the area lakes and, of course, the ocean. I also like California because it tends to be politically progressive. The state legislators are currently working to see if they can put together our own single-payer healthcare system, regardless of what the federal government does with healthcare The governor plans to fight any national rollback of environmental regulations. We have among the strictest statewide gun control laws in the nation (and among the lowest rates of gun violence). As I said, California suits me. However, there are things I liked about every place I have lived, and I am sure there are things you like about where you live. What are the things you love about your state, country or city?

@Shavkat - The weather can make a big difference in how we feel about the place we live. If we like the weather, we tend to like the place we live. I'm glad you like your city.

@DeborahDiane I do like it, my friend. It is considered the Summer Capital of the Philippines. People love to visit in the city because of the cool weather, especially during Summer season.

@BelleStarr - There are so many wonderful places to live in this world. I know that @LadyDuck loves Switzerland and @DianneN also loves both Connecticut and Florida, like you do. I love California, but I also enjoyed living in Texas and Missouri. We have a beautiful world.

I was born in Italy and lived there until I was 25. From Italy we moved to Monte-Carlo and lived there 30 years. We finally moved to Switzerland where we decided to retire. Italy is a beautiful country, to go there as a tourist. I loved Monte-Carlo, it was a fairy tale city. The weather was beautiful, great people, overlooking the Mediterranean sea but... to expensive to retire there. Switzerland is perfect for us now, safe, clean, very quiet people, excellent health system, that is important when you age.

@DeborahDiane We visited many times the United States, asking for a green card to move there was too much a trouble, so we decided to stay in Europe. Switzerland was the best country in our opinion. We are one hour drive from our native city, close to France and Germany if we want to visit, but outside the EU and all their problems.

@LadyDuck - I did not realize that Switzerland was not part of the EU. That probably is ideal for the citizens of Switzerland. It is also very convenient for traveling to other countries.

@LadyDuck - My husband and I visited Switzerland when one of our daughters went to school there for a term. I agree that it would be a very nice place to retire. I can understand why you like it.

@crazyhorseladycx - I thought you had dropped out. I'm glad to see you back here. I agree that New Mexico is a vast wonderland. When we lived in Texas, we often vacationed in New Mexico. We went to Inn of the Mountain Gods several times, as well as Red River, Angel Fire and Carlsbad Caverns. We have many happy memories of your state!

I've lived in Rhode Island for all but 10 years of my life. Those 10 years were spent in Connecticut. I think I would have stayed in CT for the rest of my life if I hadn't been called back home to care for my mother. Rhode Island is lovely but politics are very corrupt and that makes me miserable. But now that I've hit rock bottom financially, there's no where else I can go, so I've made the best of it.

@CRK109 - Living on the other side of the U.S., I did not know that Rhode Island was politically corrupt. I am sorry to hear that. I know that Connecticut is a beautiful state, but I don't know much about Rhode Island. I hope you are at least comfortable there.

@DeborahDiane I'm relatively happy in my apartment. I've been here just over a year now and as long as I keep my mind busy, I'm good. Once I have a little more money saved up, I'm going to try going on a day trip every week, just to get out and find something to do. This is a great state if you have a car. Being so small, you can really travel around and see everything. Not having a car is tough. But with the good weather upon us, there is so much more going on.

I don't like the place (DELHI) where I am presently living. It's the most polluted place , very less greenery, buildings everywhere. I always wishes to live in village area where things are more natural but my job doesn't permit it. Hope after retirement from job I may search such place and will shift there.

Home is where the heart is, and my heart is in Connecticut where I was born and bred. We have a lovely history, shoreline, rolling hills, small mountains for winter skiing, forest, lakes, ponds, saltwater marshes, rivers, and four distinct seasons. It is close to Manhattan and Boston, and filled with museums, restaurants, zoos, and wonderful things to do and see. I live in a small town with only a town green in which is our town hall, library, senior center, and a church. Each home is on a minimum of 1 1/2 acres. We have two+ acres and are fortunate in that the woods behind us is a conservation trust, meaning no homes can be built there.

I've lived in a few places as well. California, Guam, Illinois, and Wisconsin. I was born and raised in Wisconsin. I was in the Navy, stationed in San Diego where I met my husband and from there we went to Guam, and back to San Diego where he finished his Naval career, and then to Illinois for 11 years and then back to Wisconsin. I loved Guam. For a person who loves winter, I truly enjoyed the tropic weather of Guam. I wasn't enamored with California or Illinois. Wisconsin is okay. It's a beautiful state with rolling hills in the center of the state that make it gorgeous. We also have some great National Forests and lakes ideal for camping. The weather is also perfect, or it was until there was a shift in the weather and winter has been almost unseen the last few years. We've gotten snow, but not like we used to.

@just4him - You are the first person I have ever "spoken" with who actually lived in Guam. That is wonderful that you liked it. I have mentioned it on my retirement blog (baby-boomer-retirement.com) as a good alternative for people who want to retire somewhere exotic, but don't want to live in an unfamiliar country and learn a new language, new laws, and new monetary system. The U.S. territories, like Guam, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico give people a option.

I live in Jerusalem which is the capital of Israel. I love it so much. We have the Kotel here, we have the Old City of Jerusalem and we have nice weather in spring and I love summer. What I like most is where I live. I have a porch where I can sit out in the summer and get a tan. I can have a succa on my porch for Sukkot and a special place for my scooter.

I have moved house often in the past, the longest duration in any places is about 7 years. I am worried, since the 7 year mark is coming soon, but this time I don't want to move anywhere.

@YrNemo - I completely understand. My husband and I have picked out the place where we hope to move next. It is a high-rise senior condo complex within our current retirement community. The difference is that they provide dinner every night in the high-rise condos. I think we might move there in the next year or two and hope that is the place we will live the rest of our lives. I don't like to move, either. It is a lot of work. Hopefully, one more move and I'm done.

@DeborahDiane The funny thing is, I didn't want to leave other places either. Something always happened suddenly to force the move. I am crossing my fingers for this time. (I am too old for this sort of packing things and moving again...)
