Do you like to combine your clothes?

I don't understand practically anything of fashion, but I can say that I know the basic 
: don't mix causal clothes / shoes with social clothing / shoes and don't wear totally opposite colors with regard to clothes anything beyond that I'm totally lost. By the way, my girlfriend already gave me some warnings about it (but I don't care 
).
Is that important for you?

I do try to be fashionable because I like having a good style.
When I was travelling to Paris, I was reading some articles about the famous and elegant French style.
They said that we shouldn't wear more than 3 different colors on our outfits.
Formal and athletic can match nowadays, I went to a wedding last night and the bride changed her high heels and she put her sneakers on at some point.
