Mystery jar in the ‘fridge

Sometimes we find that some half-used item of food has been pushed to the back of the shelf in the ‘fridge and been forgotten behind more-frequently-used items. A few months ago I found a partly-used jar of something unrecognisable hidden behind stuff. The problem was compounded by the fact that the jar had no label at all. Obviously it was something home-made, but neither of us had any recollection of making it and we couldn’t remember any friend giving it to us. It looked a sort of brownish-pink colour with a sort of crystalline appearance, like jam in which the sugar has started to crystallise after years of storage. Every now and then one of us would look at it, not be able to bring ourselves to try it, and put it back again! Eventually I realised that we couldn’t just keep on putting it back and leaving it there, so we braced ourselves to try it, thinking it must be some rather old jam of some sort. Not at all; it turned out to be some sort of spicy pickle which my partner in particular really liked! In spite of eating it though we still had absolutely no idea what it could be made of, so there’s no way we could possibly make any more. So the mystery is still unsolved and now we have a new problem. Bother! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2017.

Mostly I keep our fridge free of out-of-date items but occasionally somethings slips past. Maybe one day one of you will remember where it came from.

@JudyEv Oh yes I have odd keys here too, and of course I can't throw them out just in case!

You never know, maybe we'll come across a recipe or something and suddenly it will all fall into place!

@Fleura It might be like having an 'odd' key and not knowing what it fits and then one day you find something locked and the penny drops.

your post made me laugh. I can relate with it. I still have the Hershey's chocolate syrup in my fridge which I bought maybe 2-3 years ago.. I didn't use it much but I know it's still there.. my mom doesn't know that it's expired otherwise.. she would throw it away..

We have a selection of rarely-used items too! But at least most of those have labels!

@Fleura you put labels on the containers?

@Slayqueen On the things that don't come with labels already, like things we've made - as you can tell from this post, if we don't we can't remember what they are!

"The palest ink is better than the best memory",as the saying here goes, you have to have a label on it next time.

@Fleura However our memory tends to fail us as we are up in years.

That is so true. I blame my partner, he is usually the one who thinks he will remember what things are!

@changjiangzhibin89 Oh I don't know, mine has always been terrible! Certain things stick in my mind forever, but other things (like school-work for example) just go straight out again. My life would have been quite different if I had a good memory! Nowadays it's a bit worse at remembering some things, but better at others.

I also use those jam jars to store various homemade food! It's a good practice to clear out the leftovers once per month. This way we can remember what needs to be kept refrigerated and what needs to be thrown away.

Funny about the jars - and the thing is that I never even buy the original contents of those jars - all the ones we have have been given to us by other people with home-made things inside!

This is weird, I mean the fact that nobody can remember what this spicy thing is. May be hot chilli pepper jam.

No it isn't a chilli sort of spiciness, it's more like tamarind or lime pickle or something like that, except we don't remember making any!

Oh yes it was nice! There's still a tiny bit left and it's so spicy that I think it will be safe from growing any mould!

LOL... I don't think that I would even open the jar if I couldn't remember where it came from lol. Been there and done that before... and it wasn't pleasant!

I don't know, it's a few months since we noticed it and by that time it was already mostly used, and since it has no label we have no idea when it was made!

Well it was in my own fridge, I don't think anyone would have sneaked a jar of unknown poison in there. I haven't annoyed any Russians recently : )

I call these items "science projects" especially if there's mold growing on them.

There wasn't any mould, it was too spicy for that!

@Fleura Even without mold, I would've deemed it a science project in my fridge, lol. You acted in the spirit of science and medicine by testing it on yourselves.

I routinely find what we refer to as science experiments in the fridge. I generally will not risk eating them...I've seen the results of consuming spoiled food.

We examined it carefully, sniffed it, poked it, tasted a tiny bit... it all seemed fine so we ate a lot of it. Still don't know what it is though.
