Mystery jar in the ‘fridge

Sometimes we find that some half-used item of food has been pushed to the back of the shelf in the ‘fridge and been forgotten behind more-frequently-used items. A few months ago I found a partly-used jar of something unrecognisable hidden behind stuff. The problem was compounded by the fact that the jar had no label at all. Obviously it was something home-made, but neither of us had any recollection of making it and we couldn’t remember any friend giving it to us. It looked a sort of brownish-pink colour with a sort of crystalline appearance, like jam in which the sugar has started to crystallise after years of storage. Every now and then one of us would look at it, not be able to bring ourselves to try it, and put it back again!
Eventually I realised that we couldn’t just keep on putting it back and leaving it there, so we braced ourselves to try it, thinking it must be some rather old jam of some sort. Not at all; it turned out to be some sort of spicy pickle which my partner in particular really liked! In spite of eating it though we still had absolutely no idea what it could be made of, so there’s no way we could possibly make any more. So the mystery is still unsolved and now we have a new problem. Bother!

your post made me laugh. I can relate with it. I still have the Hershey's chocolate syrup in my fridge which I bought maybe 2-3 years ago.. I didn't use it much but I know it's still there.. my mom doesn't know that it's expired otherwise.. she would throw it away..

@Slayqueen On the things that don't come with labels already, like things we've made - as you can tell from this post, if we don't we can't remember what they are!

"The palest ink is better than the best memory",as the saying here goes, you have to have a label on it next time.

@Fleura However our memory tends to fail us as we are up in years.

@changjiangzhibin89 Oh I don't know, mine has always been terrible! Certain things stick in my mind forever, but other things (like school-work for example) just go straight out again. My life would have been quite different if I had a good memory! Nowadays it's a bit worse at remembering some things, but better at others.

LOL... I don't think that I would even open the jar if I couldn't remember where it came from lol. Been there and done that before... and it wasn't pleasant!

I call these items "science projects" especially if there's mold growing on them.

@Fleura Even without mold, I would've deemed it a science project in my fridge, lol. You acted in the spirit of science and medicine by testing it on yourselves.

i am sure most of us have a similar problem with our fridges. My wife is worse than me at keeping things in the Fridge.

I would have thrown it in the bin, afraid of nasties lurking inside!

I routinely find what we refer to as science experiments in the fridge. I generally will not risk eating them...I've seen the results of consuming spoiled food.
