I think you need to move that "deer crossing" sign...

Have you heard the joke? Well there's a joke that is along the lines of a man writing into a paper telling them that the transportation authorities should move a deer crossing sign because the area is much too congested with traffic and unsafe for the deer's crossing... Of course, it's a joke because the sign is posted for our benefit and not that of the deer. There is no deer sign posted in the area I am about to talk about, but it is a given that you should be careful around that area. The other night, however, someone found themselves the unintended perpetrator to a deer's demise. We saw the results later that day, on the way home from a store. It was quite late at night, and so hard to see. However, the poor deer couldn't have suffered because the velocity in which the oncoming car was traveling was much to great for anything else. The poor deer was practically slaughtered by the car, and perhaps subsequent cars after it's death...

My neighbor showed me a video of a woman in this very same situation. The video was of the place where the traffic sign was posted (on a busy road), and the voiceover was of the woman who'd called in to a radio station insisting that the sign should be moved into an intersection in town next to a pedestrian crossing sign. It was idiotic.

I agree with @Paigea in saying that that would explain why the joke is recurring. How dumb can people be?

Oh my goodness, I hate to read stories like this. People should be more careful, but many do not care at all about the life of an animal. I wonder if they would care for the life a a human.

I think it is around 50 mph through that stretch of road. I think it was late at night when it happened. I traveled that road several times that day, and by early evening it had been cleared away.

@ScribbledAdNauseum 50 mph it's too fast for a road, we are allowed to 80 mph on the highway and toll roads, but never on rural or city roads. The max speed on those roads is from 30 mph to 38 mph.

A frontal collision at high speed with an animal like a deer can also cause a lot of damages to a car, and I am sure that the driver will be a lot more careful in the future...

Yes. I haven't heard anything on the news about it, but I did wonder that the car wasn't also damaged. A few miles further up the road, we've had near misses in the dark. Luckily the speed limit was lower in that stretch, and we were more weary as deer are sighted their plenty.

Sorry to hear of the poor deer. Deer signs are necessary of course.

The ones we do have along that stretch are further down. They also are adorned with red noses for when Rudolph season is here.. But yes, perhaps after this incident, more deer signs will be placed in this area.

We see more skunk roadkill around this stretch than anything else... We've nearly hit a deer several times on this road, albeit a few miles ahead of where this was hit.

I don't live in a particularly rural area. It's more suburban, but there is a significant stretch of just homes along a state highway... With that being said, we see more skunk roadkill than anything.

@Courtlynn count yourself lucky then! I'm unfortunately well acquainted with the smell. There is a stretch of about 2 miles here where skunks are known to wander, and find themselves roadkill.

Sort of hard to direct the deer to a certain place to cross. I remember a skit on SNL about two deer standing by the side of the highway. They were waiting for cars to come. Silliness. Poor deer.

I had a collision with a deer about 3 weeks ago. But in this case, the deer hit my truck, instead of me hitting the deer. Fortunately, I saw the deer out of the corner of my eye and slowed down to practically a crawl. Even at my slow speed the deer still hit me! But my story had a happy ending. Other than a slight headache, there was no other noticeable injuries to the deer.
