In a Muslim country, it is said to be the strict rule of not to eat pork meat. It is the forbidden meat to be consumed by the local people. When I was in Tajikistan, I though it is possible to live without pork meat in my system. The reality check had come to realize when staying in the country for about 2 months. OMG! I am craving to eat grilled pork meat. The feeling of dying and praying to God to give miracles.lol The best thing I can do is to find an alternative meat. I had found the skewered lamb meat called “shashlik.” It tastes like in seventh heaven and imagining that I am having a proper meal for the day. Have you tried to eat “shashlik”? “Can You Live Without Pork Meat?” Image Credit: Shavkat

Is "shashlik available in your country? I think Pakistan is near the border of Tajikistan. I assume you can have it as a meal.

I haven't tried to eat the roasted one. I was in desperate to eat meat. In some local restaurants, I also tried to eat some meals with beef. I can't cook beef at home. It seems there is an aftertaste.

I like pork meat when it has been converted to sausages, pâtés or ham, but not really by itself, and I would be able to live without it. I am eating lamb rarely, and I never tried shaslik.

When I had tasted "shashlik", I felt not easy at first. Lamb meat is not common in the Philippines. But then, I can see the local people in Tajikistan love munching it. So I tried and in some way, I like it. In terms of pork meat, I love grilled pork meat barbecues.

I am not sure if you have it in your country. I had read that it is called "Seekh Kebab" in India.
23 May 17
@Shavkat Thanks Shavkat, but seekh kabab is made out of meat of goat which is called mutton, not lamb meat.

I can't imagine what you've gone through. I can tolerate not eating meat for months. But then if I wanted to I can just go to a store a buy some. No need to pray anymore. I have tried mutton, I didn't like the taste of it. I think lamb is much better.

In fact I enjoy eating beef and seafood much more. I don't eat pork so much. Although I am not quite sure about what is shashlik, but I think I may eat the similar. Sometimes I will buy the frozen lamb and I will bake it with cumin and it tastes really good.

I have not heard of Shaslik, but the long skewers remind me of Shiska Bob. I imagine I could live without pork..and most meat, but not entirely. I would have to have something.

When I was in Tajikistan, I also thought I cannot live without eating meat. Then, I realized that it is not possible for me. It looks like Shish kebab and the difference,"shashlik" is prepared with pure lamb meat.

We don't eat a lot of pork. It's not a religious prohibition. We just try to avoid it as a matter of being more health conscious. We also avoid eating beef.

I do agree that we can't consume pork on a daily basis. It is because of health concern. I usually have pork meat with vegetables to balance the food intake.

@cmoneyspinner I do think that during the pre-historic days. They are not aware of such limitations. Now, it is a good thing that we have the choice not to eat any kinds of meat or continue to eat because of the people accustomed to it.

@Shavkat - I believe everything God gave us is good and to be received with thanksgiving. Pork can't be that bad because there are people in other parts of the world that have it almost every day. They live to be about the same age as people who don't eat pork. But we can't ignore our own genetic make-up. Whereas one person can eat something and it doesn't bother them. Another person might eat the same thing and it causes heart problems, high blood pressure, etc. So! In my family we try to avoid pork and beef.

I used to eat pork before I got married to someone that doesn't consume it for religious purposes. I am from Belarus and eat shashlik, or as they call it here shish kebab, plenty. But instead of a pork one I eat the chicken or lamb ones, sometimes even veal liver ones. If they are not overcooked they are so good.
