What's with these tough little dogs?

Down the hall from me is a couple who owns a little dog. I've seen her several times. She's very friendly with people and practically licked the skin off my hand tonight! Her "mom" was taking her out for a walk, so we got into the elevator and started down to the lobby. We stopped at another floor where a guy was waiting with his much larger dog (looks like an Akita - gorgeous dog!). The little dog immediately began barking and tried very hard to get out of the elevator car to get that big dog! Meanwhile, the bigger dog didn't seem phased at all. Little dog's mom hit the button to close the door before any blood was shed and we headed back down. She said that her little dog hates other dogs, hence all the barking. I've heard of this quite a bit but never witnessed it myself before. Some of these little dogs think they own the place and want to kill the big dogs, when, in fact, it wouldn't take much to take the little dogs out. What's with these tough little dogs? It's pretty funny, but I wouldn't want to be the owner of one of them. Seems a little dangerous to me! Claudia

haha Perhaps it is because of their small size that they have to over react lol

Maybe, I don't know. It's terrifying to watch, especially in an elevator car! I was so afraid we were going to have a dog fight in there, and I was trapped behind my walker!

@CRK109 Yes it is terrible really, he should have waited and let one dog at a time go.

@TiarasOceanView Oh he did. The woman in the car with me was able to close the door before anything could happen.

I think many small animals have an ego in inverse proportion to their size! Shetland ponies are much the same - very feisty and not afraid to take on much bigger horses.

@CRK109 They are adorable. We had a Shetland cross once and when I let her out with three bigger horses, she just strutted through the middle of them. They scattered and she started eating their hay! It was pretty funny to watch.

Really? I never knew that about Shetland ponies! I think they are so adorable! And my late husband really loved them. But we had never heard about that before. Go figure!

My Chihuahua loves big dogs. She tolerates small dogs, but big dogs are apparently what she considers her "peeps". Pit bulls are her favorite. She'll bark at them all day long.

A lot of little dogs seem nervous to me and this could be a reason for the barking and such. Out of nervousness. Also, I wonder if the instinct that these little dogs have isn't something that is not really a thought process, just instinct. If they had time to think about it would they still act the same way?

Yes, it could be nervousness. And I guess it could be instinct, too. I don't know. Just funny how the little dog was barking her head off and the big dog was looking at her as if she was crazy!

Short people also behave in an obnoxious way to make their presence known! An Akita would swallow tiny for breakfast and still be hungry!

yes, the Akita would have only had a little snack there! He's the most beautiful dog in the building and I felt badly that I couldn't visit with him because of the yippy dog we had in the elevator!

I've noticed the same thing myself! Those little dogs think they're top dogs! I bet they are all bark and no bite!

@CRK109 I could picture the little dog barking away, and then turning and running in fear once the bigger dog made a move. But then I could picture the little dog stopping, turning around, and barking again at the big dog, as if to say, I may be small, but I can still voice my option! haha

I doubt they would have time to bite! Or maybe if the other dog had taken a step toward the little one, the little one might have turned and run!
